And today I did......

The weight gain thing seems to be endemic, I've been 10st 7lb consistently since I was 18 and without noticing have crept up to 11 stone recently.

Looks like middle aged spread is more than a myth.

When I was serious about rock-climbing I was 9st 7lbs, in the winter playing rugby and ice-climbing it would go up to around 10st 8lbs. I'd lose it fairly quickly from March onwards when I'd start rock-climbing again but now I'm over 12st and can't shift it.

Not so much the case of middle-aged spread as all Lurpak and no low-fat spread.

The heaviest I've ever been was about 11st 7lbs when I was touring with bands, lots of good food from our caterers, combined with not much boozing and seriously hard work. I didn't have any fat on me though. Within six months of stopping it I was back down to normal weight.

My GF has gone up from 7st 7lbs to over 9st in the last few months as well. I think we maybe spend too much time sitting around eating and drinking wine.

Today I decided to face the fact that my faithful old Cotic Soul is dying. The 4 small cracks propogating around the headtube/downtube joints have got longer and had children. There's another around the top tube now and three more on the none drive side. Three years of Thrunton abuse, clumsy riding and longer than recomended forks look to have finally taken their toll.
I'm going to strip the paint off at the weekend and investigate further but I'm not under any illusions.

Looks like I need to build myself a new frame.

Since you can build your own frames you'll illicit little sympathy for the demise of an old one ;)

Why not just replace the offending tubes and see if its possible to improve the Souls soul

I did think about that. The cracks are just on the welds so a repair could be possible- maybe a new tapered headtube and slightly slacker geometry. Then I thought whilst I'm at it I could change the seat tube to a larger size so I could use a dropper post. Then there's the drop outs- I've got some nice Paragon swingers sat on my desk that makes changing from SS to geared an easier task. Then there's the wishbone seat stays which lead to a slightly harsh rear end which I'd like to change to regular fastback stays....

It goes on and on. Triggers broom and all that. The only thing I wouldn't change would be the bottom bracket shell.

don't get me wrong, I love the bike and still think its the best off the peg hardtail available, but you can't beat custom for getting exactly what you want.
