An OR Toad and a Brodie.

Not sure if this'll help much with the year of the Brodie BC, but I'd be grateful if you could tell me if any bits of this are wrong:

1. Paul Brodie started making bikes under his own name in 86 or so (?)
2. the first bikes branded as Kona came out in 88 and were either designed by PB or 'borrowed' the design of PB's bikes
3. the 88 Konas all sported rear U-brakes, but by 1990 only the Fire Mountain had one, and I *think* the same goes for 89
4. your Brodie has a rear U-brake
5. by 1990, none of the Brodies in the catalogue had a U-brake

So do you agree this might point to your bike being most likely made in 1987 or 88?

Thanks Anthony! As BC is famous for other things, I'm afraid my memory is horrible.

It was around '88 he started putting decals on his own frames? Whether he did a few of these while still at Rocky before he opened his own shop and what year, I don't know, can't recall, it's all muddy. I was never much into Kona's so I wont be much help. U-brakes seemed to disappear on all the high-end bikes by '90 and only lower end bikes stocked them? Wasn't the 90 Cindercone a u-brake? I loved u-brakes, I thought they were dead strong with great feel.

The Brodie I have here never seemed to have decals for the model name but the colour seems original.

love the toad & brodie. tasty fillet brazed local steel. i'm guessing you've already received a plethora of 'if you ever think about selling' pm's...

lol, yes, I have received a number of pm's. Most over the Toad, some over the forks on the Brodie. It's funny how things come full circle. Once, these bikes were nearly worthless and were 'old technology' when the industry went from fillet-brazed to TIG

interesting that the era spawns the nostalgia that it does. the canadian content does it for me, as the local scene was exciting & for a time, leading edge. we had (well, still have) some of the knarliest trails on the planet, and the local manufacturers were stepping up to produce appropriate hardware. vancouver was a relative hotbed of innovation & manufacturing with rocky, brodie, mountain & beach, syncros & raceface (guess you could throw in kona & rec-tec's sandvik ti frames as pseudo-local) producing trick, shore-worthy stuff. fun times for sure.
