Alternative rear derailleurs for Campag 8spd ?

I'm building up a bike with my old 8sp ErgoPower Record shifters and cassette, and starting to regret having sold the original rear derailleur.

Has anyone had success in using a non-Campag rear derailleur with this setup ? For example with Shimano 7, 8 or 9 speed ?

I've got plenty of Shimano RDs kicking about, and loathed to spend the money currently being asked for 8spd Campag RDs...

Start looking for Shimergo. There is tons of stuff about that particular mix. The CTC forum is especially good. Some people will say that it never works whilst some will have no problems. Are you using a Campag cassette? That may or may not make it easier. For example I use 8 speed Ergos with a Shimano rear 105 mech that just has the cable attached slightly differently.
I would also suggest looking at Sheldon Brown (just search for it) for all sorts of ideas and suggestions.
* speed Cmapg is very eay to mix and match. Why not look for another Campag mech? I also run a 9 speed rear mech with no issues.

Yes, it's a record 8spd cassette.
What you're saying sounds encouraging. I read around or at least just try a few mechs straight away.
If successful, I'll post something here.
CHEERS.

I've got a similar dilemma to yours. I have 8 spd ergo's and a 105 rear mech, and people say all sorts of things about this. Some say it works fine, others say it'll never work.

This page has all the tables you need:http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3946

Although some of the combinations on this page are not meant to work on paper, some people say they do. So I'm pretty lost...

Do let me know if you try out the 105 rear mech and succeed/fail.

One of my bikes runs 8 speeds Ergo's and a 105 mech on a Shimano 8 speed casstte. Spot on. Once I set the smallest sprocket to be in exactly the same places, an 8 speed freewheel also works the same. Nominally they are 0.3mm different in spacing I believe,.

I'll certainly share my experiences...whatever they are.

I have looked on the web, including that CTC page, but the problem is I'm using an 8spd Record cassette with my 8spd Ergos...and I don't think you can fiddle a Shimano RD to shift 5mm from that much cable pull. And even if you did, the reduced leverage would make shifting quite hard. Anyway, we'll see. I'm sure there are some combos that no-one's yet tried, i.e. 11spd Campag RDs...

Oh, the joys of having complete matching gearsets ! (SRAM X0 or Dura-Ace on my other bikes never ever go wrong !!) Why am I faffing around with all this

I've got a cheap but in good order campag avanti 8 speed rear mech if interested. Only thing, cable adjuster is missing.

Cheers!
