Alpinestars Almega Frame

Devout Dirtbag
I have recently sold an Almega on the forum here. The buyer says that there is a hole in the back of the seattube about the size of a 2p coin that was hidden under a piece of tape.

He suggested that it had been cut in order to free up the seat post but it is an aluminium frame so it shouldn't have rusted.

Is this hole meant to be there? or has the frame been butchered by a previous owner?

Please help!

Hmmm...

I don't think a frame has to be steel in order to "rust". Aluminum oxidizes too, and I think it's certainly possible to an aluminum post to fuse into an aluminum frame.

Doesn't help you, but I think it's possible..

In the early days I remember seeing an aluminium frame with a similar hole but not that big more like one pence size, wondered why and now I know.

Seatposts can get stuck in aluminium frame (alu & steel seatposts)

I've never heard of a hole being drilled into the frame to fee a seatpost before though.

Really a pic would help - but thats a pretty bloody big hole to be covered by a piece of tape (and not notice!) being a nosey parker I looked at the pics in your sale thread and cant see clearly anywhere on the seat tube for a hole of that size to hide.

I've had a 'couple' of Almegas recently and I can't say it's a problem I've noticed. Obviously they're more prone to cracking in certain areas, but this type of corrosion is a new one to me..... :? :? :?

I had an Al Mega BITD, and it didn't have a hole in the rear of the seat tube - I've never seen such a thing and never heard of it as a technique for removing siezed posts.
Has the buyer sent you pictures of this?

with a bent seat tube you can understand the logic on this

mine hasn't got a hole in it , 1 of them any way ;)

I think that it had a cracked seatube ...possibly and someone went overboard with the drill bit to stop the crack :?
