Alpinestars Al mega XT 1990

Okay! So another material used for the 1992 frame ...assuming the '91 wasn't Easton  I am not sure anymore.

Think your right Elev12k. And never has the phrase 'steer clear' been more apt in a commercial.

okay,..told the seller that i wouldn't do it becuase it isn't the elevated chainstay,..but now he tells me it is (i never asked him before BTW)
he tells me it is has a black fork,..and blue decals,..

Sounds odd the 1991 is the one pictured (previously) and the 1992 is all black with multicoloured decals (shown below).

yes,..he just indentified this picture as the bike it is,..

is this any good? (better then the once previously mentioned)

it has the original XT group in a nice condition,...

The flying welshman is the man to ask i'd say. In his earlier post he seemed to suggest that post 1992 al-mega's should be fine and if anyone knew he'd be the man. I have however seen a few 1992's with cracks between the estay and the BB on ebay.

You may need to take an educated guess on this one. Check to see how much wear it's had, original tyres, rings, BB's etc should be a good sign. I have quite a few pics of original al-mega XT's if you need them.

There was a week spot where the head tube met the down tube, but this was sorted post 1992. I can not comment on cracks elesewhere. At the end of the day we are talking aluminium frames that are nearly 20 years old - thats why you see me on a 531 road bike or a Orange P7 ;)

Great scans Sinnett! Could you please send me them in original format so I can add them to the Gallery 2 archive?

That Vari tubing is on the early Manitous as well...
Ive wanted a AS DX for years after one was offered to me BITD.
I wasnt allowed it as Mum thought the receipt was fake..>! :x

That's just like the one that sold on ebay the other day...looks cool, but I didn't bid due to the info in this thread....at $27, I guess it was a bargain :?

Did you buy it then?

Found this scan on photobucket of an al-mega XTR too (BTW a guy at work has one of these and still rides it every day! He certainly doesn't hammer it though.).

that last scan of sinnett's looks alot like the dx i had with that funky little gusset wrapping around the head tube---it didnt seem beefy enough to really support the joint right there, but i guess it did with me---looks like it has the combo threaded/threadless steerer as well

My Al-Mega also has that big ugly gusset. Hilts and I both thought it was a bodged repair job - it hasn't stopped my head tube cracking in several places!
