almost 40

i've hit about 48-49 - one time from Dunkery beacon, and the other on a little hill in Uplowman Devon - with a right hand bend at the bottom.

not bad not bad, my best is 49,7 on my mtb running 48 to 11, 48 recently on the road bike, 52 to 12. Was going to race down countisbury hill into lynmouth but the cars slowed us right down frrom 45 to 25, rims were hot at the bottom!

I did 52.6mph going the other way back towards Porlock a few years ago.

Jesus that's heading towards a hairpin that's vitually as tight as it possibly could be! How did you get your speed down enough?

It was at the top decending off of Exmoor somehwere after the cattle grid but before you get to the proper Porlock hill 25% steep bit. I was going full gas 48:11 ;) and doing 50+mph when I bunny hopped the cattle grid  I did have some issues scrubbing the speed off as the hill steepened and the corners got tighter. I remember being on the wrong side of the road on the sweeping left hander (before the first tight right hander) with my left foot out of the pedal, my cleat scraping on the road and the smell of overheating brake pads and rims . Scared myself a bit

As you said, the really steep part of Porlock hill is too short and with those hairpins far to dangerous to attempt any sort of crazy speed run.

We used to do that BiTD by holding the front wheel against the back wheel of our motorbikes (on the centre stand) and revving the b*ll*cks off it until we got a decent 'top speed' to show off to our mates who weren't 'in the know...' ;)

So I need to do at least 50mph!

I know what the bloke with the 25mph Raleigh means.
I got a Huret speedo of someone, he was probably pissed his bike only did 25mph. I put it on my bike, an Elswick[knowing my dad it was half the price of a Raleigh, but the same color] 5speed, might have been single speed and possibly had apes on it when I put the speedo on. I used to find steep hills and pedal as fast as I could down them and never managed more than 25mph, even going down the road by Guildford cemetery and that seemed pretty steep.

No, but I came off at low speed coming down Rivington Pike 2 weeks ago and broke some ribs!!
Speed is your friend!

I rode from Porlock (?!%$*$%!?%$ thats a steep up!!) to Lynmouth and really wanted to see how fast Contisbury was but as I dibn't know the road I was way too scared to let go of the brakes for too long - the one thing I did know was that it got very steep and busy at the bottom so I didn't want to chance it!!

i'm too scared I might fall off or the bike may fail - has this ever happned to anyone at great speed?

Way back in 1998 I clipped a hedge with the end of my handle bar at 40mph and came off, you're right to be scared. No helmet either  . I didn't ride a bike again for over a year and it was a few years before I had the bottle to go quick down hills again!!!

You're not wrong ;) It's the hardest hill I've ever ridden up, ever. For those who live in Somerset go and have a go at New Rd. in Draycott (near Cheddar), it's not quite as bad Porlock but it's still enough to round off those square tapers

Anyone here ridden the Hardknott Pass???
