Alloy corrosion

Retro Newbie
Hi guys,

I have a 1998 Marin palisades trail that I am restoring. Not mega retro I know but it has served me well since new and has been stuck at the back of a shed for years while I used other bikes. The frame is a laquered alloy frame and I have some white corrosion marks on it. Any ideas on how to and if it's possible to treat them.

Thanks and hello

You can strip the lacquer off (I used Nitromors) and polish the metal with some fine grit sandpaper/wet and dry to get rid of the marks and any scratches. Then use autosol to polish the frame up. You will probably have to polish the frame every few months dependant on useage to keep it shiney.

Thanks for the advice mate, do you think it would be possible to re-lacquer it after I strip it and polish it?

I think some on here have done but it could be liable to go again under the lacquer. With mine I just polish it every 6 months or so. It hasn't ever tarnished too much but a quick going over with metal polish brings it back really well.

i got a 99 marin rocky ridge and stripped the laquer off it

it took forever the extra strength nitromores didnt even peel or bubble at all just made the laquer a little softer it honestly took me about ten hours of solid scrapping to get the laquer off the frame
