Advice on a 1995 Scott Magnum 2.0

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum....and riding in general....its been a good 3 or 4 years since I last had a bike.

Anyway, recently I've been looking to start riding again....looked round Halfords etc....but not overly impressed with the quality of their lower priced bikes.

Today while on Ebay, I stumbled across a 1995 Scott Magnum 2.0......and I bought it :|

I'm going to collect it tomorrow....and it looks in good condition from the photos....plus it was only £45.

Is there anything in particular I should be looking for?

Thanks for your help :)

Re:

Anything you should look for?!? You're committed now so too late!

The old bike woes are commonly: seized seat post which can be a pig to get out, rim-trashing age-hardened brake blocks, perished tyres, shifters where the grease has hardened and they don't work, rusted cables, stuck bottom brackets, worn out rims that split. Cracks on old titanium or alloy frames, rust and less commonly cracks on steel ones. Yes, we love old bikes here.

Is it this one? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1995-SCOTT-MA ... 7675.l2557

If so the quick release needs doing up on the front, servicing the forks would be a good idea.

Yes that's the one. I'm planning on stripping/cleaning/servicing it all. Plus maybe fit some new forks...it'll only be used along a canal tow path....nothing too strenuous.

I'd rather spend some time and money getting an old but decent bike up together, than buy a Halfords type bike....which judging by the reviews.....would probably break within a couple of weeks anyway.

Re:

Hey, that looks like a bargain for £45!
Looks like it has Mavic rims, and some Shimano STX-RC parts on it, the Rock Shox forks look like Quadra's if I'm not mistaken (they have elastomer stacks inside so very little to go wrong).
I'd just check that it all works as it should and take it for a test ride, after a clean and lube it should handle towpaths with ease :)
