Has a few bits of mud and cr@p that I need to brush out but the seattube is now looking pretty darn smooth and clean. To say I am happy is an understatement!

Going to clean it all this week and try a t cut but the paint was fairly bad before so I am already thinking powdercoat. I also think black was the worst colour they did on these, the postbox red was certainly more iconic and the history mans purple was rarer and also preferable I think, personally.

Hoping to get this finished by October, which is quite quick for me and my amount of spare time.



 
Probably getting near to ten hours. You can do it a lot quicker if you had a spare weekend day, something I never have! (Mayhem exception!) because you could top it up constantly to keep it hot and going. And the first few hours I didn't do it strong enough really. Could knock a few hours off as each time I had to get the frame from the garage take it to the bottom of the garden, get everything ready etc. So probably for a thick seatpost that is proper stuck and you can't prise it off from the top - like I have seen on youtube - about 6 hours melting. Viveno had a saracen similar and he told me about 7 hours he reckoned.

Just in time to tell you it should take a 30.2mm seatpost.

Did the caustic soda take any of the paint with it? It usually does.

Yes I abandoned one previously here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=135529&hilit=saracen+kili which now resides with Mikee but as I have a lovely riding trekker which is now running perfect, taking my time with this and will definately get it built.

I did managed to save the paint for the majority, but having cleaned it up over the weekend there is a line all the way down the seattube about 5mm wide where the caustic soda ran from the bottle cage bosses, which must have been in the early days as I plugged this with more blutac later on. In all honesty I was never that keen on the black and you can see from the first pictures on the thread that the paint would have been hard to rescue as it was, so next month it will be going for a repaint, powdercoat.

Whilst this might take a while, I have some maguras in bits to tinker with and need to go through my spares box to make sure I have all the other parts I need, which I think I do except possibly wheels. Are they 130 at the rear (I will measure later). Plan is for a bit of a mix between deore and xt I think. I will tr and keep it period but may have to build it up and change at a later date. Thumbies for certain.

Thanks for clarifying the seatpost is 30.2 which I will leave in here as a reminder in case I need another. Luckily for me, TheHistoryMan has very kindly given me an orignal in silver from his build, which I have used and fits like a glove.

Having finallyput SPDs on my road bike, this might be the first that gets them of my mountain bikes. Should be interesting!

Having checked, the steerer does also have a 92 stamped in it, which I knew it was, but is a cool touch.
