I'm normally a believer that you should do things how you want them done but i'm out of my depth on this one so advice needed. I have recently purchased 2 sets of judy forks as i needed a replacement for the indy,s on my fire mountain. One set is an early judy xc in a lovely pale goldey silver. The other are 97 sl's in that terrible bright yellow. The sl 's look to have more travel and are in better condition. Which would be the better choice? The xc's will certainly look better, leaving the sl's to go on the rts . What are people,s thoughts? The bike will be a regular rider. Are judy,s even any good? Hanx

I was always a big fan of Judy SLs BiTD before SIDs came along..
Never rode the XCs but remember the look well.

What colour are your Fire Mtn/RTS?

Got pics?

fire mountain is blue but soon to be resprayed grey. rts is currently in primer but is probably goung to be polished.

i think looks wise the sl's are better on the rts but if they are a better performing fork than the xc then i'd rather they go on the bike which will be ridden more regularly.

pics of the fire mountain and rts are in the link in my sig

I've not ridden the XCs but would imagine SLs to be better.
SLs would look great on a grey or polished frame, XCs would look better on the grey frame then on the polished one IMO. You could also strip the forks, have them TF tuned and resprayed/decal'ed to suit*

*if this is a proper resto job and you're having frames resprayed then it might be worth it not to have tatty forks on a nice freshly polished/lacquered frame.

Just my 2p ;)

The SLs should already have a short steel spring while the XCs got only elastomers.
So the SLs should not only have more travel but a way better response characteristic.
For everyday use I would not recommend any of these forks as they are a mess stiffness wise, aint got any damping (altough there is a so called oil damping in them) and the bushings get loose really easily.
Also I`ve seen quite a few with a broken crown.

I`ve ridden several Judys bitd and in my opinion the first good suspension forks were Marzocchi Bombers or Pace forks.

Sorry about that but imho Judys are only good for the show room.

cheers for the info. when i say they are off on my main rider its more they are off on my main retro rider so i'm not too bothered about them being as good as todays forks. just wanted to know of the models i have, which are the better ones.

cheers guys
