A 1985 Jamis Dakar that needs rebuilding

I have a 1985 Jamis Dakar. Currently it's in working order but it's very hard to ride (it has all the original parts, including some very bad foot pedals), and needs to be rebuilt. I'm looking for some quality modern parts that would fit, and don't know where to begin looking.

What needs replacing is:

The gears
The brakes
The tires
The seat
and the pedals.

Basically I just need to know what to buy.

Would be a terrible shame to restore such an early bike with anything but original and / or period componants. If you want to put modern parts on it you might as well buy a new bike. All the parts you list are available in your local bike store, but I wouldn't if I were you.
If you decide to restore as is you will get plenty of help from the guys and gals on here and most of the parts you need should be easy enough to source on eBay.

If you decide against rebuilding this in period kit, I would be very interested in taking this off of your hands. The Dakar was my first 'proper' mountain bike and I would love to get hold of another.
Got a few more modern bikes I'd be willing to trade too

Reckon you could update it but wouldn't. A lot has changed that wouldn't make it too straight forward, rear wheel spacing, headset sizes, brakes etc. A new bike would make much better financial sense. Theres 1 or 2 new bikes for sale in the for sale section.
