so it obviously looks to be a Kilauea - not bad.

Well if it is a Kilauea then that's a real nice bonus but the question is regardless of the model will you be going down the period correct route with parts and frame colour or just the colour and your own personal choice of parts ? ..

Re: Unidentified Kona Frame - 96 Explosif/Kili?

I found an old pic. of my 18" Kilauea on the scales

And a pic. from the driveside

At the first pic. on the scale you can also compare the chainstay design.

Yeah if it is a Kilauea (I'll check the top tube measurement) then I'll try and match the 96 colour. If the top tube is large then I'll paint and decal it as a Gold 96 Cindercone.

Either way i'll put some TB P2's on it along with a Velocity stem, Kona's Easton race lite bar, and impact headset that I already have. I might even put the Curve cranks on it.

However I want to stick with a single speed .... so will stay with the Paul V's and Paul/DT Swiss wheels.

that also comes to my mind, al

it's more likely, that people label their bikes as Hot

Which is what the owner of this bike did to their '95 Sex One (see the Kona thread) ;)

Yeah ...that's mine  ...if Gil_m has the file for the SEX ONE Decals than I'd be happy and will change it. But I couldn't find any at the time and figured its so obviously not a HOT that it should be pretty clear I'm not actually trying to deceive anybody...i just liked the "kona custom" Decals cos of the custom shock it has on the bike.

From a bit of rooting around in the archives, it looks as though the '96 Kilauea has a 28.6mm top tube, while the Cinder Cone has 31.8, so measuring the top tube diameter should give you a quick method to distinguish between the two.

Top tube measures 29.1mm so it has a few coats of paint...might explain the extra 60gms in the frame weight over Martins Kilauea. Will weight and measure it again after I strip it back to bare frame.

Seems like you've got this planned out nicely and i have to agree regards the gold paint choice and 96 Cindercone decals and the Paul Vs and Swiss wheels are well worth sticking with so i'm looking forward to the next update and finding out what you've actually got yourself ..

Re: Unidentified Kona Frame - 96 Explosif/Kili?

After stripping down the frame was 1940gms so with that, the diameter of the top tube and the overspray in the bottom bracket tube being turquoise I decided to getting some kila decals off Gil_m and respray trying to match the colour out of the swatch book.

here's how shes looking now...

In the mean time I have brought a 96 explosif frame off ebay ....so the velocity stem and tb p2 forks will be going on that this will stay as is.

Re:

Preferred the tan/orange saddle but otherwise really like this single speed Kona with the respray colour. Also really like Magas' lovely green gummy tyred Kona too. Very nice work chaps! Always lusted after a Kona but never got round to one.
