94 Mag 21 vs Mag21 SL/Ti

In an ongoing but not desperate search for a mag 21 SL Ti I’ve ended up buying a pair of well used Mag 21 from 94.

Correct me if I’m wrong ….

But the only differences on 94 sets are the fact that the SL comes with a slightly different crown (when viewed from below) to accommodate the alloy steerer and the Ti bolts/canti studs.

So in theory the legs , internals , brace , stanctions are the same. The crown looks the same when viewed from each angle apart from underneath. This means I could add Ti bolts , and it’s a Ti SL (almost)

Obviously the steerer is steel as they didn’t make an alloy threaded one.

Was there a difference with the brace too?
Otherwise, agree with differences you mentioned.

I believe in 94 the brace was the same. Certainly on the pair I’ve just purchased it’s identical visually.

But again it’s only from what I’ve read and looked at myself.

Steerer and crown

"SL"
Alu steerer on the SL (this is pretty much the SL part) and a 7075 (or some alloy number better than the normal steerer). The crown has a slightly different finish.
AND
Magnesium Brace (you can grab these of later Indy SLs but check weight).
Lighter, cooler colour and flexier.

"Ti"
Titanium canti stud, the 2 brace bolts
The 4 crown bolts.

Stupid but cool when new leg colour.

Stickers saying how cool you are with SL and Ti on them. These are well worth it.

At some point on 94 models the main shaft rod changed from metal to Delrin, but this was true for both models.

So yes, change the visible bolts and colour match legs it to the bike, stick stickers on it and nobody will know from looking.


(and polish the crown, the normal is slightly satin finish, in my head it is similar to m900 cranks on the normal SL one, could check tomorrow have a few of each).

I’ll have to wait until they arrive to compare the crown materials/ finish to my other pair. Certainly looks close as it is.

Brace is pictured below. Design wise it looks the same as my SL/Ti one.

The plan is either to make them a fake SL-TI but threaded or to restore back to a normal Mag21.

I think that's a later crown as it shiny. Which is good for you.

The brace will look the same, that's been stripped of its black colour. Or its a very messy replacement silver colour one (weight is the only way to check for Mg or Al brace)

I’ll weigh the brace compared to my other one too.



Im leaning towards doing them the same as my other pair I did a while ago with the cerakote gold lower legs and silver brace.

Let’s see what they are like when they arrive. The seal on one leg is dead so I’m a little apprehensive of getting too excited on plans as even thoug the seller says the stanction is unmarked I’m not convinced.
