91 Dave Yates ex round the world expedition bike 20.5" frame

"win" ?
its an auction, not a competition.

did anyone on here buy it ? who knows, with all the "winners" who dont show up.

Well....., Im a little in Awe if im honest.

Due to personal stuff going on at home, the seller was kind enough to keep this back till whenever I could collect, my father kindly stepped up and suggested the long drive to collect.

I cant thank them enough.

The bike, has clearly been very well maintained, with subtle patina, and less than I would have expected really, pedals were put on for the sale, but the rest is how its been left from the last expedition it was on.

Tange Prestige Fillet brazed frame
Tange Prestige Fillet brazed fork,
both with additional rack and eyelets for the travels, including additional pump peg and waterbottle bosses.

Mavic Chainset
Mavic Bottom Bracket,
Mavic M281 CD rims
DT Stainless Spokes.
(Wheels assembled by Mel Bentley Leeds.)
Campag Hubs
Campag Rear mech
Campag Front mech
Campag Thumbshifters
Campag Cantilevers
replacement.. Shimano Block.
Shimano XT headset
Shimano XT Brake levers

Mudguards ESGE.
Brooks Saddle
Tioga Bars and Stem.

The wheels are perfectly true, and all the gears function without fault, the cables are recent, and even the brake blocks are only half worn, the chainrings have worn exceptionally well too.

With a good clean and a polish, a stem adjustment for size, perhaps a wider bar to fit me and she will be good to go again.

Its a shame not everyone looks after there kit so well, it would make all our lives much easier.

Re:

So when will the overhauling rather than rebuild thread be up ?

Would love to see some better pics and if you can get the back story in more detail than already known and share it then that would be great bonus

Re:

This bike had found its perfect new owner...a bike with such history could not have landed in safer hands.

Very much looking forward to seeing this gently fettled to fully reveal the bikes true beauty.

Great stuff.

Cheers Fellas,

I was a little disappointed I couldn't collect this one in person, especially when my father said he was such a cool fella.

I was glad to hear he hasn't given up cycling, just no longer travelling and a handbuilt road bike has taken up the mantle.

If ever there was a bike I don't wanta mess with its this one, my use for it will be simple, Im going to use a trailer for my one year old to go in it, and its going to be taken on adventures, but the long haul of the days of Kilimanjaro Im sure are gone, but not forgotten. Easier days in her old age but used and loved no less.

We have exchanged emails however and he has some cool stuff on slides which he will send over when he can and hopefully fill in a little more detail of his own adventures and the choices he made all those years ago.

I think for me to get best use from it a slightly longer stem and bar is about all that's needed, but even that feels a little criminal to me some how.

The saddle looks like it could be the most comfortable armchair of any bicycle I have ever seen....!

Am glad that for once my posting this bike up was of some use!

It looked a great bike with good parts and a hand build frame, its previous owner clearly knew what he wanted.

glad it's gone to a good home !
