9 to 7 speed conversion - shifter options

Hi,
Think I might convert my 'modern' hard tail to 7 speed as I need a new chainset and they cost too much. I've got loads of 7 speed stuff lying about so seems like a good idea.

I believe I need spacers for the cassette, so will look into that.

The sticking point seems to be the shifters. I'm running hydraulic discs so need separate, non-integrated devices. Are my only choices xt or deore thumb shifters, or some low-end, modern stuff?

Cheers,
Sam

Hi
I've got a set of 7spd RF+ shifter pods sitting up in the shed, probably stx or the like.
They work perfectly as I just took them off my wife's bike yesterday!!! :D
Pm me in you are interested!!
Cheers

'need a new chainset' - I dont get why the move to 7spd when theres 8spd which would need no hub mods. And that you could also use 7/ 8spd chainsets with nine speed. If your modern is external BB, a normal UN54 cartridge BB will pop straight in allowing loads of old chainset options

Cheers for replies and offers.

So, LGF, a 7 speed chainset, say an m730, would work with a 9 speed setup? That's where it all stems from really. I want to put an old chainset on, and put a square taper bb in, but didn't think it would work with the 8 speed chain. Maybe all I need to do is stick an old chainset and bb on then?

8spd chain and 7spd chains are one and the same. You can use 9spd chains too.
