'89 Ritchey TimberComp - more pics

I'm sure Tom Ritchey would approve of one of his vintage frames given a new lease of life and still being hammered around, rather than hung in a museum.

Chill guys, the only thing he has damaged is the resale value!

I think the objection is that it could still be hammered around in the original paint ;-)

Commented on this on flickr.. Still think it looks good. OP seems to have fun riding it.

But this is just wrong JPintheCAN  :D

It could have been restored to period correct spec and paint and be given a new lease of life though. You don't have to destroy a Rembrandt or Piccasso to enjoy it's qualitys- why do it to such a lovely bike?
Last year I restored my 87 Fat Chance, even powdercoated the frame for toughness but in the original colour. I also refitted every single original componant. Today it is sat in the shed filthy, it gets riden every week on my local jaunts and has done over a dozen RetroBike meets over the roughest of trails. When washed it still looks immaculate. A perfectly restored vintage bike does not have to be a garage queen, or used on soft trails.
Ah but!, I hear you say.. Yes I have done something similar to a Yo Eddy recently, but that frame was shot, fit for the skip only. This Ritchey was in no such state and a much rarer bike.

I really think it is a shame that this bike has been vandalised in such a way.

It's easy to say "don't get it resprayed" from the other side of a computer screen but I know from experience, and most blokes are the same, that when the bike is in hand and you're looking at it everyday it's almost impossible not to fiddle.

I personally don't like your colour choice and it was beautiful before & the fact is: when the original paint is gone, its gone. However you're not too far away from any other restoration on this site just missing decals. !

i think some peoople should be a little more respectfull of jp's reasons for doing it though - concerns over rust. he's hammering this bike and wants to be sure the rust issues were not affecting the frame.

i do think its a shame the original paint and patina are gone, i really do but its not as if it has been done for the sake of amking it trendy now is it?

to those saying it should have been repainted the original colour, it still can. ok not original paint but it could be made to look original once more.

i think i would have kept it as it was and risked the rust !

Very hard to find such a decal now…

In my opinion, respraying a frame isn't a problem. You could give a 2nd life to it and protect it. OK
But before removing the decals, being sure you have a set ready.

LOL what a thread :)

More power to the OP, his bike, his money, he can do what the hell he wants to do with it. Besides, add some Ritchey decals and it will look like a stock black painted Ritchey from 1989 (yes they came in black to IIRC).
