Retro Newbie
Hi all

I have my old DB Apex, which I'm looking to upgrade and cant seem to find a block which will fit. Its got original '89 Deore hubs which I believe have a shorter freehub then today.

any recommendations on block replacement and does anybody know a good replacement chainset I should put on?

Thanks

Denali

Suppose you could start by taking a good side on picture and adding it to the 80s Rides threads! Love that DB smoke paintjob

 Remember them MBUK OK stickers!

An old High School buddy had one of them, full Deore DX groupo with STI shifters. Was very jealous, as I only had my Raleigh Ravine at the time

If it were mine, before doing anything I'd de-grease, take that handlebar thing off (sorry, but it doesnt suit it ;) ), take all the damaged decals/stickers off (new ones can be sourced from gil_m on here) and then make a decision as to how the re-build is going to go.

Blimey, That takes me back.. That is a very original awesome looking piece of 80's machinery! Well worth some love to bring it back to top condition! ;)

That will b a fantastic bike if you can bring it back to life !

My Dad had an Axis back in the day that was immaculate, had the smokey paint with a really funky purple laquer, was Tange Prestige tubing (so light) with XT 18 speed groupset,Rear u brake, Farmer John & FJ Cousin respectivley, It also had the flattest longest Tioga T Bone stem I have ever seen  ............... then some theving scroat nicked it from our garage back in 1992.

Look forward to seeing the progress

Have you got a 6 or 7 speed block ? Is it screw on(freewheel) or cassette ? Can't remember that far. 7 speed cassettes are harder to find these days but are about.........freewheels a plenty.

a 7spd feehub should go straight on from, say, an Alivio or STX 7spd hub - these can still found all over the place.

7spd cassettes are still easy to get.

I know this is an oldish thread, but I've just recently had my '89 Apex refurbed, and the Shimano HG70 Cassette 12-28 7 Speed, fits it perfectly.

Mine's had a new bottom bracket, new grips, new tyres, new cassette, new chain, and a new saddle, so it's tip top and is still working a treat. I have to change the pedals too, as the cages on the original pair are shot. Other than a few small dinks here and there, it's in brilliant nick :)
