This DL of mine is the bike that just keeps giving and giving.... grief mainly.

So, having counted the sprockets of the freewheel that fitted the frame a treat, I came up with 7, so I ordered a new 7 speed Shimano freewheel, right? No.

Turns out the old block was a 7 speed thin, so my normal spaced block wont fit, hence the need for a 6 speed block.

Given that the bike is for happy days and holidays are the SunRace freewheels any good?

I know the Shimano ones will do the job, but with big black and white lettering on the big sprocket, they are not very 'retro', so if I have to spend another £7.99 on a new freewheel, it might as well look the part.

I think I used 800 grit paper to remove that lettering. Dulls the black paint a bit but looks a lot better than the gaudy white lettering.

AFAIK Sunrace used the tools from sturmey so can't be all bad. Bankruptbikeparts do a few.

Are the Shimano ones HG?

TBH I don't know and haven't looked, as it never really crossed my mind to.

I got my black ribbed brake cables from the bankrupt stock guy on ebay, look the part.

Off to find a 6 speed block then, thanks guys.

I use sunrace, never had a problem. As Shaun says, they bought the Sturmer Archer tooling and to my ears the ratchets make that distinctive Sturmery Archer tick. Something satisfying about that on an old Raleigh and they index perfectly too if needed.

Thanks, I thought they were HG. Just out of curiosity I had a look for Suntour Ultra 7 freewheel and ultra chain. Blimey, not cheap!!

Thanks, I have used Spa for chainrings in the past, this time I gave my business to SJS Cycles, just down the road from me in Bridgwater.
