2nd Summit

Jaggs

Dirt Disciple
So, after a very long time and a lot of stops and starts, the second summit again resemble a bike.

I bought the frame a few years ago, and it went in the garage, potentially never to be seen again. After any number of higher priority issues, I suddenly found myself with some time on my hands.

The summit was just a frame and headset, so most parts have been searched for, begged for, chanced upon, and obtained from a lot of people on this site. And for that, I have to thank everyone on here. It was a labour of love as unlike a previous Marin build, this one is for my better half.

So, I went mainly for Deore DX, and manage to obtain NOS boxed, brake levers and STI shifters and cantilever brakes. The derailuers are obviously used, but functional, as is the crankset.
There's a few areas I'm not done with:

- Wheels - I had to use a pair of Mavic 217's which don't have matching hubs. I have a pair of NOS Mavic 261CD's and a pair of Deore DX hubs to put them on, but they're not done yet, so these will have to do for now.

- Headset, still some fettling needed, seems to loosen

- Forks - seem to be losing pressure down to a certain point, but, my wife isn't as heavy as I am, so might not be an issue. I could change them to a working pair of Mag21's, but I don't have the correct length steerer/crown as yet. Forks maintain some pressure so I don't know if this is even necessary as yet.

New parts - the handbars are new Aluminium, and the seat post is new, and the pedals cheap and cheerful. I have an original saddle, but the missus insist on something call 'comfort'. Not sure what that is.

Tyres - not my choice, the other half like the tyres on the Marin, and these *just* fitted, and I mean, just.

So there it is, it's working, ride-able, and a bike again. Not perfect, has battle scars, and could do with decals, but I am happy it's where it is.

Re:

I like it. I think a silver post might look better as I’m a sucker for stem matching seatpost but like you say it’s useable and doing the miles.

I miss my Raleigh peak!

Never the lightest but just so well put together this era of Raleigh.

Jaggs, brilliant, I think it looks great and you should be pleased with it.
Bet you are glad it's a bike again now.

I briefly had a Summit for a few months but bent the frame.

Is that the 17" frame?
I would have got a 17" with the Peak if I could have actually chosen that.

Seatpost good yeah?
Adjusts very easily and good design.

Yeah, really happy it's a working bike, way too small for me, but should be fine for the better half, she'll be riding it.
It is the 17" Frame, I could have used a smaller one I think, but it's be fine. It's a trail/park bike, not going to be going full off-roading on it, so it should be fine.

I like the seat post, fits perfectly, and colour wise goes with the darker frame and offsets the chrome/grey tyres. Besides, the original proponent seat posts appear to be as rare as rocking-horse poo....

I now need to finish the first Summit. It came with horrible Suntour XCT forks, which were massive and weighed a ton, but i managed to find a set of fully working RS-1's. Other than that, apart from a V-Brake on the front, it is entirely original apart from the tyres, and was serviced regularly. So I've put a set of Panaracer tyres on it, swapped the forks, and just need to change the grips and the brakes, and it's back to how it came out of the shop, and apart from the decals in remarkably great condition.
