26" Tan/Amber Wall Tires?

@Dr Dremel @ladkii

I decided to reach out to Ritchey and float the idea for a repro MegaBite in 26", nothing to loose right?

Not sure whether to get my hopes up but a nice fellow named Adam Leibow was kind enough to provide this reply:

"Thanks for writing in and for the suggestion. I think bringing back the WCS Megabite 26” x 2.0 tire in a tanwall would be cool. I’ll share the idea around the office and try to get a read on stoke level. It’s tough because there are so many tanwall gravel/MTB tire options out there; it could be a saturated market, but having a Ritchey option would be special."

I replied to him as follows:

"Thanks so much for your prompt reply and for even considering a repro WCS MegaBite.

Thing is there’s actually very few tan or amber wall options in the 26” size. I did a lot of searching and big companies that offer MTB/gravel tires such as Specialized, Michelin and Continental may have some amber or tan wall offerings but only in more current wheel sizes and no options in 26”. Not to say there aren’t options but slim pickens.

I started a thread on the subject a couple days ago and there been a lot of back and forth with some modern lesser known brands being suggested, the Panaracer Smoke/Dart combo is the most common go to for vintage restorations other than very expensive NOS tires from back in the day.

Here’s a link if you have an interest

On page 2 “Dr Dremel” lamented “it’s a shame, I wish Ritchey (and others) would make a skinwall again”

Who knows? I've got fingers crossed on both hands currently 🤔

I'll post an update when I receive a reply
I’ve just done the same to my preferred 4 manufacturers asking to please do 26inch canvas wall reissue’s.

If we all did it they might see the light.

Wanting to keep my old MegaBites in rotation I decided to try another refurb idea @Dr Dremel, your plasti dip idea looks like it may do the trick but wanted to try a different approach.

The side walls are fully in tact. Just the outer coating is less there. Yesterday I rubbed in and coated the side walls with Dubbin

I know it's meant for leather or even pleather but it's intended use it to moisten and protect so, why not try?

The dry side walls seemed to absorb the Dubbin, it's kind of an orange tint so that's a good thing. Darkens them a bit but not in a bad way. I'll assume I can keep applying it taking care to maintain a dry rim breaking surface.

I'm thinking it may be a viable option, we'll see after a few rides, the black rubber received a healthy rub of ArmourAll as well

Did you come to a conclusion on the Dubbin - or did it come to nuttin'?

I've just fitted a pair of DMR Moto DJ (26x2.2) to a new build. Yet to be ridden, but as a tarmac/cruiser/towpath option - I thought these were worth a go. IMHO, they look pretty good on an early '90s frame and there's plenty of clearance.

those tyres look really good. i like that they don't have huge logo's, like the schwalbe tyres.

That frame is bloody lovely !

@Carge I think the Dubbin approach may be a viable option (no harm done by trying), haven’t had a chance to properly ride them yet but it seems to have absorbed nicely and has at least improved the look of the dried out side walls

The DMRs look sweet, thanks for suggesting another modern tan wall option that looks the part fitted to a vintage build 👍

Lovin' that Breezer BTW 😍

Cheers @Canuckbiker - I have some tired tyres that I might try it on.
And to @JCS - I was after something non-BillyWonker with regard to the logo - plus something more street as opposed to proper knobbly.

Kinda build thread here....

I'll try to remember and report here once I've mounted them up and ridden them.
I had a pair of those on my DeKerf, they were a great tyre if its not too muddy, rode fairly well on road too, the price I ended up paying after shipping and import from Blue Lug was eye-watering though and I wished I hadn't bothered in the end!

Interesting that they are made by Panaracer - and that they have FairWeather Dirt Lander in "Ivory" that are actually Darts with the "Panaracer" logo on the sidewall - but nothing in ivory to use on the rear - kinda dumb.

All we need is an ivory Smoke to match

Any pics of that DeKerf? I'm sure it needs it's own thread.

I needed several things for a new build otherwise I wouldn't have ordered the tires alone, DHL shipping would have been the cost of a third tire.
I've not been stuck with duties from Japan yet 🤞
