I've not found mine too bad, but I've come from High Rollers which don't really do mud. I'm quite lucky because I dint tend to ride in real mud, just sloppy, sandy water!
I've always used the single ply DH versions so that I can get Super Tacky's which weigh in at just under 900g for either whereas the HD's are just under 700g. Having used Super Tacky's for so long, I'm used to the extra drag although I do cry as soon as I have to ride on tarmac.
Are you planning to ride this weekend? I'm going to the mud bath that will be Coed ay Brenin on Sunday.
