2011 msc f5 second repair fingers crossed again

Re: 2011 msc f5 unsuccessful repair (update)

Should hold for a bit, but remain a little dubious long term to be honest. Tidy work though fair play.

Re: 2011 msc f5 unsuccessful repair (update)

Have you thought about getting it heat treated to bring back the stiffness after welding?

I would have thought that is the only way to get the required strength back.

For this case, that is the only solution.
I use this process in some components (non bicycle) several times and after testing then we have good results!
I will weld my high octane shock support soon like this.

I could help you but send the frame here to Portugal can be expensive :D

Re: 2011 msc f5 unsuccessful repair (update)

Yeah just abit is there no one the UK that does it plus when we hacksawed through the weld found that the original and our reweld hadn't penetrated the billet aluminium so warmed the billet up before rewelding so fingers crossed

Re: 2011 msc f5 unsuccessful repair (update)

Have to say when i saw the first repair that it didi not look like there was good penetration into the frame.

Re gusset if it were my frame i woult have out a box type gusset over the weld nit a filket lke yoy hsve. Gusset having two side pkates and one on tio that joins the two running inside the frame triangke if that nakes sense.

Good luck wuth the repair.

Re: 2011 msc f5 unsuccessful repair (update)

Hi,

I've cracked my f5 in the same place, must be a design flaw and not just a one off. How did you get the main pivot bolt out before welding? I thought it would just be a case if taking off the end cap and firing the axle through with a hammer but that doesn't seem to work, and I don't want to hammer any harder haha

Thanks
Jamie

Re: 2011 msc f5 unsuccessful repair (update)

Remove the two pinch bolts that hold both bearings in has the red pivot comes out with the bearings on them I had the same thing before a removed the pinch bolts and seen a couple crack there to hope this helps

Re: 2011 msc f5 unsuccessful repair (update)

Thanks, ye I removed the pinch bolts, then removed the 6mm Allen bolt, but still couldn't get it out. Are the two big red end caps threaded in aswell? Tried to turn them but they just turned on the spot.
