2001 Cannondale F4000sl - now F5000SL team volvo build

Welcome to my new project thread. I’ve been wanting to build one of my all time fave bikes for years but never got round to it due to the rarity and cost involved. I have now decided to sell off a bunch of other bikes and parts to fund this build.

The search was on for either an F4000sl or F5000sl in team volvo colours. As these retailed for circa $3600 USD back in 2001 it is a pretty hard bike to get hold of. After searching for a while I managed to find a 2001 f4000sl frame in size medium on e bay Germany.

I aim to follow the original high end specification of this bike when building. Although the parts I will use may not all be completely period correct they will be of the correct spec level i.e. Shimano XTR groupset and I have a 2001 lefty carbon/titanium fork on its way from the USA.

Here is the frame as it is now.

That looks mint! How much does it weigh?
What is difference between 4000sl and 5000sl?

Re: 2001 Cannondale F4000sl team volvo build

 nice, i wouldnt mind knowing the difference between the models too, was it just spec?

I bet thats light. Leisure Lakes used to have a Cannondale frame on display which had been cut in half lengthways so you could see the tube profiles, thin is an under statement

Look forward to seeing more

Re:

Not sure about the weight as I dont have scales but it is very light. According to the brochure it is 1.54 kg. The CAAD 5 frames were quoted by Cannondale to be lighter than titanium.

The F5000sl was released in the year 2000 as the flagship hardtail in the range. It was raced by the team in the 2000 sydney olympic games and I believe that the Cannondale team had a winning year at the world cup hence the champion stripes on the frame. There was a 4000sl also in 2000 which had the same frame but ever so slightly lower components.

In 2001 there was no F5000sl and the F4000sl became the flagship hardtail. The spec of this was identical to the F5000sl i.e. mostly XTR components with Cannondale CX2 chainset. Both bikes seemed to be available with either fatty headshok Ultra DL forks or carbon DLR lefty forks with electronic lock out. I’m building mine with a carbon lefty as I have never had a lefty.

did the f1000 use the same frame?

Yes, F1000/2000/2000SL/F4000SL all used the same CAAD05 frameset with F700/900SL/3000SL using the CAAD04 for MY2001.

Oh no! You do realise this will give you new "fork goggles"

I have 2 lefty bikes and 2 more that I want to convert!

So since I last posted I have got myself a full 2000 year F5000SL team replica.

I have the carbon/titanium lefty still and set about researching the correct team Volvo blue colour to make a period correct lefty. The colour is RAL 5017 using white primer. This photo shows my test sample.

This weekend I painted the lefty and added new decals from the USA.
