Re:

Very interesting!

I refurbed my 98 Mount Vision recently and went for s similar look - I went all stealthy with matt black in the front and gloss black on the ‘updated’ disc tab swingarm.

I’ve recently done a long off-road trip on mine (Sandstone Way) and she behaved perfectly with 26” wheels. I’m intrigued about 27.5” or 29”!

With the slightly longer rear end a-la B17 then 27.5 goes in no problem with a conti 2.4 tyre. Couldn't say about the standard swingarm for sure.

The 29 WTB tyres are 2.1 and that works fine. I tried a Spesh Butcher 2.4s and the rear fouled on the seat tube before the shock reached the end of its stroke. A Conti 2.2 seems OK but clearance isn't huge.

It rides well considering, still tuning the air pressures. It feels tall, if that makes sense. I have yet to try it properly, only been out with the kids recently but next trip out I'm taking this with the 29 inchers to see how it goes. I'll update when I have an update.

Re:

Playing with this one again. Bringing it even more modern with the gears, I found myself some XT M8000 shifter and mech and an 11 speed cassette. Going to try 1x11 to see how it goes. Not got so far as fitting the chain and connecting up cables yet but one step at a time.

But because that would be too simple I also swapped out the hope mono mini's for some slightly green tech's. They should go nicely with the slightly green chain, chainring and the tad of green on the rims.

Re:

looks great, which wheel size did you settle on? Loving this thread.

Mines finished but haven't ridden it yet as I can't easily get back to the UK.

Re:

I'm setting up with the 27.5 wheels for now.

Part of the logic of going with 1x gears is to clear the front mech out of the way to give a bit more clearance for the bigger wheels so that's the next test. I mean the 29 wheel fits but there wasn't much clearance for mud etc so hopefully this will give a bit more to play with.

Just waiting for a day off with daylight and dry weather and ideally above zero temperatures so I can do the next bit and get it all set up.

Tricky part with this is the mahoosive cassette is right at the limit of what the mech can handle, so fingers crossed it all works. Plus being a modern clutch mech I don't fully understand where all the dials and screws are so will have to be paying attention while I work it out.
