1x9 or 1x 8 ratios...what do you ride?

Think I'm going to change my gearing.
At the moment I have 32T Uno up from with 12-23 Ultegra rear block.
Climbing is fine (maybe a little too much mashing when it gets steep) but I run out of spin on the road.

So...ratio gurus....what do you think the ultimate alround set-up to cover commuting and the occaisional trail centre foray.

38T up front and 11-32?

I can't work out ratios  :D

it all depends on your playground and thigh power!

i run 36t X 12-26t and it covers 85% of situations but i don't have super steep hills around here

I would see which 'gear' you rid in around town, then what gear you ride in on the trails and then which you use up the hills.

Writ that down and you have you span. Add a bit either side if you think you need it.

Stick in here and play around with what you need at the front when you use an 11 tooth.

I run 36 ring to 12-30 8 speed cassette. This gives a top ratio of 1:3 and a low ratio of 1:1.2

This seems to give me a good set of gears for the slightly up-down nature of my 8 mile round trip commute each day, and still gives the ability to climb/go like a maniac if I feel like it. Its also the biggest single ring that will fit on my bike, which had more of a impact on my gear choice.

PS. To work out the ratio is simple its just 1:(front ring/rear cog)

Running a 38 up front and a 11-32 on the rear would give you the following ratios :)

38 front ring...
11 6.7 - 18.2 % /13 5.7 - 15.4 % /15 4.9 - 13.3 % / 17 4.3 - 17.6% /20 3.7 - 15.0 % / 23 3.2 - 13.0 % / 26 2.8 - 23.1 % /32 2.3

Dont know if this is any use to you.. :) ;)

Cheers chaps.....think I will go 36T....can't find a Middleburn Uno though.

Thanks Cedric....but that list is pants...half the companies there don't show Middleburn in their range...or if they do....not much of a range.
