1999 Schwinn Homegrown 4 Banger

Found the frame on EvilBay!

Carbon headset spacers have arrived, and snagged a silver Thomson Elite seatpost for cheap from the 'Bay as well.

Re:

Nice! eBay is hit or miss for 4Bs. I am looking forward to seeing your build. I have a 17' and 19' 1999 4 B. The 19' is a daily ride. The 17' is a project.

Sneak preview and where I am so far:

1999 Schwinn 4 Banger Homegrown 19" with SID rear shock
Mavic Crossmax ST wheels (20mm front axle/QR rear)
Kenda Nevegal 2.10 UST front and rear tires
Marzocchi Shiver SC fork, approximately 125mm travel
Chris King red anodized headset
Kore Elite 90/100mm stem
Easton Monkey Lite DH handlebars (711mm), in the mail
Shimano M952 drivetrain (shifters, BB, cranks, front and rear derailleurs and 11-34 M953 cassette)
Shimano M755 4 pot disc brakes (A2Z rear adapter) 203mm front and 180mm rear RT75 discs
Thomson Elite seatpost
SDG Aliso saddle, in the mail

I haven't decided on pedals but may just pick up Easton flatboys, but I have some Shimano SPDs that it came with.

The bike as it sits has a 68/71 angle. I don't know if the SID shock works properly till I have the whole thing assembled, though. The front M755 caliper is leaking out of the banjo but the hose was too short anyway - I sourced NOS Shimano steel hoses that suit the longer travel fork and larger brake disc. When everything arrives, it will get sent to a local shop to get the front caliper bled.

Nice bike and color! I've always found that rear suspension very cool! A couple of years ago I wanted to import one myself but due to high postagecosts I didn't succeed...

Re:

Hi R32,

Nice sofar ! Look forward to see more.

Absolutely great with the Shiver up front.
How did you manage to mount the rear brake caliper?
I kind of stuck with the Hayes caliper, although I don't
realy like'em. I'd rather put a C2 on. Aswell as some nicer forks.
A carbon Manitou Mars or a Manitou Milenium would look nice.

Here's my 4banger in progress:

It is an A2Z parallel to IS mount - you would need to use a bigger rotor (180mm) than the standard 160mm though. It isn't the most elegant of solutions and I would much rather have the 2000-on IS mount droplinks. I am also pretty envious you got a CT2 carbon seatpost - that was my first choice seatpost as I kind of wanted to get every bit of Easton finishing kit I could get.

The bike should be completed by the end of next week.

Re: 4 Banger

Hi R32,

Look forward to see the finished bike.

You are right, with the time period Easton carbon parts it would look nice.
Way better than the titec parts, as in the 2000 cataloge.

On that rear brake caliper. I might consider selling the hayes calliper, as I
bought a set of '99 ProStop II Disc-brakes (the hydrolic ones).

Good luck with your build.

Cheers
Jeroen

Re:

Seeking opinions - should I stay with the Kore Elite, or get an Easton MG60 stem in black or bronze?

Re:

So I got the bike back from the LBS - they did a pretty good job above and beyond the job sheet I specified, too. The mechanic was into old bikes too and said this build was "interesting" which probably meant he had a bit of an opinion on the eclectic mix of parts - the Shiver SC fork is always a love-hate sort of thing for most people.

Now updated with new pictures taken outside:

The head tube badge provided by RB-er lamparito replaced a Bonus Tomato sticker that originally adorned the
head tube - I prefer factory. Drip-irrigation tubes were cut to length and sliced as sleeves to protect the frame
from the abrasive surface of the stainless steel brake hoses.

That Bonus Tomato stem cap - red to match the headset or black as it is now to match the stem? I also can't figure
out if the Kore Elite stem is NOS or a reissue. It is a 0 degree 90mm stem.

ODI lock-on SDG grips, Shimano M952 shifters, M755 brake levers and Easton Monkeylite DH handlebars.

2002 Marzocchi Shiver SC 120mm, Shimano M755 4 piston brakes and NOS 203mm RT75DH rotors

A2Z parallel mount to IS adapter. It will eventually be painted chrome or black. lamparito's package
came in just in time that I replaced the cracked rear drop link as well.

Thanks for watching! A ride report shall come soon.
