1999 Schwinn Homegrown 4 Banger

I've been away for a while, but while the front triangle was away at the painters' getting colour matched and decals reproduced, I came across another 18" front triangle being sold on a Schwinn page on Facebook. That pushed things forward quickly, but placing both original-paint Straight 6 side by side revealed that the colours weren't consistent, or one or the other had faded. All that fuss about colour matching was essentially wasted!



I decided to just settle for the easiest build since I already had everything else. Some NOS bits went on, like M755 XT brakes and a M952 front derailleur. (Those Crossmax ST wheels are a pain to locate in 26", 20mm front and 135mm rear axles!) After a bit more of a fuss with mismatched seat posts I now have "his and hers" matching Schwinn Straight 6s!

the pic's as the comments and observations made loose their impact particularly at the early stages.

I realize that my last posts had gone off topic, referencing the Straight 6 of which now there are two. So what you may ask, does the original namesake of this thread look like now?

In order to make up a matching parts build for the other two yellow bikes, the 4 Banger took on some changes to its parts list. The Shiver SC was replaced by a Rock Shox Recon, even though my dream fork would be a Fox Vanilla 125R, as I have replaced the rear SID shock to a Fox Vanilla R as used by the Straight 6. That also upgrades the 4 Banger to Straight 6 suspension travel, though I retain two SID rear shocks should I ever want to try out a different feel. The wheelset had also been changed, as the Rock Shox runs a 9mm front QR - thus Crossmax ST became Crossroc UST. I had also located additional spare Straight 6 magnesium rear dropouts featuring IS-standard brake tabs, and had the A2Z brake adapter removed, and rear brake rotor downsized to suit. The bike is set up for a low-ish BB height to further slacken the head angle.

Final steps is to obtain a good scan of the original 4 Banger rear swingarm decal and have it reproduced and fitted.

Hi I hope you don't mind my slightly off topic question but I have some 2002 shiver sc's on my 97 heckler. 1 of your posts near the beginning you reference them being 120mm travel where I was under the impression they where 100mm how can I tell which I have?

Sorry about the reply a year late. The later Shivers had their travel reduced. Those that do, have a different decal on their legs; so if yours don't look like mine, you probably have 100mm Shivers.
