A half-hearted eBay bid a couple of weeks ago resulted in a somewhat unexpected auction win and this 1999 Kona Haole finally arriving today.
As you can see, despite the seller delaying shipping & complaining he had to pay £64(?!) to post the bike, it seems no further expense was spent on packaging the bike, literally thrown into a box 🙄.

At least reassembly was a simple job...

...well apart from the "free" lock that was still locked on the frame, but the bolt cutters soon got rid of that .

It's a 56cm frame made of Columbus Altec 2 tubing, I've not given it a thorough going over yet, but it looks ok apart from some paint loss on the top tube, no other obvious damage.

The components are a mix of 105/ultegra, with a flat bar setup up front with XT dual control shifters/brakes.
The Fulcrum wheels are ok I think, but everything needs stripping down, checking, cleaning, and replacing if needed, so this isn't going to be a quick build.

Good bones! Are you going to put some drop bars on it? IMO (and for no real reason) it seems to be asking for them . . .

(And I'm thinking you'll probably need a new chain . . .)

At first glance you might think so, but I've stripped the bike down today and almost all the components are toast. I think this has been stored outside for the last 10 years... At least.
Definitely one of the worse eBay purchases I've had.

Crankset is a 105 5500 drive side & Ultegra NDS, 53T ring is quite worn, octalink BB is dead.

Cable ferrules are rusted into every orifice, I've removed a few with a pick & copious amounts of WD40.

About the only good thing I can say is that the frame and fork are intact, albeit with plenty of flakey & missing paint.

Bugger 🙄

Not sure at the moment, new chain is the least of my problems! 😅

How about the wheels?
Fulcrum Racing 5 Evolution wheels (not original), tyres are cracked, both rims have wear but not excessive.
front wheel seems ok, rear needs new bearings & the cassette is worn, it had a MTB QR fitted and the exposed end was bent over (probably from when it was sticking through the box during shipping), had to cut the QR to get it out of the wheel.
If the bearing surfaces aren't too bad then I might be able to re-use the wheels at least.
