1997 Nuke Proof Reactor hardtail

I do have one of the original bearing, plastic washer and sleeve. (luckily for me they were stuck in one of the linkages). Of course now I have to get the rest. I already bought the roller bearings (got them off e-bay for a decent price, those are fairly common so they won't break the bank at least). The sleeves still need sorting out but machining them is a fairly straight forward job.

Just collating all of the info I've seen on the bearings so that I can see if the bearing supplier can come up with some, or make them if needs be.

I'm still not clear what that notch in the bearing roller bolt (or whatever the proper name is for them) does and how it works. Confidence is high on the sourcing of the bearings front, so maybe sourcing the mounting hardwear is possible too - fingers crossed.

If there are any other details that might help me source the right bearings/hardwear/washers etc, let me know.

Have you had the quotes back on the braces yet? Kind of excited and also worried at the same time that this could be come a reality, but maybe an expensive one.

The notch in the roller bearing axle is quite clever actually, on the mating side of the axle there is a small hole drilled with a pin pressed in, that sticks out a couple of mm, and corresponds to the notch. This way when you bolt the whole thing together the pin inside the notch prevents the axle from spinning.(that's all it does, one could argue you could do without the notch and pin setup but it's interesting from an engineering point of view).
I just got the upper bearing for the headset delivered (the cannondale sized 1.5" one).
I sent the guys at the shops an e-mail and waiting for response, our kind of work is not exactly high on their priority list. I'll pester them some more, hopefully I'll get an answer soon. Still have to sort out the cockroach logo.

Finally got something moving at the braces front. One of the guys got back to me with a quote (haven't heard anything from the other guy in a while).
Here it is from his e-mail:
"The "fork brace set" is made up of an upper and lower brace.

The price of the material, 7075 is right around $45 a set.

The anodize would be approximately $100 for the 4 sets. $100/4 = $25 per set
I say approximately $100 because it seems somewhat arbitrary at times, it changes, but mostly upward.

The machine shop programing and setup costs part would be spread over 4 sets, so at $160 a set x 4 = $640. That is really a hour piece for each individual part, and keep in mind there is 6 setups involved, which is pretty cheap.

As you can see the cost are spread over 4 sets, a reducing in number of sets would raise the cost of the remaining ones.

So, at 4 sets,

$230 a set."

What do you guys think? It doesn't seem like a bad price for a fully custom set of braces (stronger than the original ones) fully done anodized and all.
ishaw and gis_guru let me know if you're in on those braces. If you think they're too expensive and you would like to find your own machine shop to do them I can always mail you the CAD data.

That sounds like a bargain to me. Let me know when and how and I will get you the funds. I appreciate the hard work.

I'm in too. Just need the rest of the bits to make the poor frame whole again. Need to chase up the bearing hunt. Any idea on the bolts and washers? Would like to try and keep it as it was specced if possible.

Alright then, I will let Andy (the milling guy) know that we'll have 3 sets of braces. For some odd reason he quoted me for 4 sets so I send you guys an updated price on the parts (doubt it will increase by a lot). Should I ask him to get us a quote on CNC turning the roller bearing axles? (titanium or stainless?) those should be fairly straight forward.
I could in theory make my own at work on the hand lathe but I think he'll get tighter tolerances than myself and it'll take me forever to make a full set.

It can't hurt to get a quote. If it stings we can always politely decline. Would this include both ends I.e. The roller bits and the bolt bits (with notch)? I'm going to need fork end caps too. I think i stupidly sold something recently that would have fitted. Doh!
