The other day I "picked up" this 1997 Kona curiously named after a 90's TV dating show  the seller only lived around a mile from me, so I walked there on my way to the shops, and rode the bike back, I was impressed with the rear end and generally how the bike handled for a Retro full-sus.

I think it's pretty much standard spec STX/LX, Avid levers, Fox Vanilla coil rear shock, and a nice condition but internally dead Rockshox Indy XC fork.

The plan is to modernise it a bit with parts I have to hand, and it'll replace the Hahanna that is my other halfs bike which languishes in the shed unridden in over a year. At least with this bike I can ride it now & then and justify its place in the shed (I just haven't got around to telling/asking her about the change yet  ).

Today I completely stripped it down, interestingly and unknown to me the fork is actually the dual-crown version, as in... there were 2 crown races fitted on top of each other
I'm going to do something with the chain slap damage on the chainstay, just a bit of touch up paint needed, and grease the pivot points upon reassembly.
and I've made a start on repairing a few of the top tube decals with some model paint.

Fork wise, I could use the silver Marzocchi Z3's from the Hahanna (traditional and period choice), or use some black 2000 Rockshox Jett's I have (just because they're handy), or go nuts and fit the Pace RC36 Evo's I have hanging up (the "skys the limit" option).

Re:

That's nice our jim.

Never seen one before. That front end does need to come up a bit. Shove the jetts on and maybe a stem with a little more rise.
The more I look at retro bicycles (these days) I think "gosh how did we ride them"

Nice, fresh colours!

Re:

I don’t think the tractor tyres help things,Bontrager Jones, sounded like they were ripping up the tarmac on the way home!
I’ll test fit some forks tomorrow, tempted to bling it up though as I doubt my Mrs will actually ride it anytime soon (or ever).

Re:

It turns out "Ford Magnetic Grey" is a surprisingly good paint match for the rear swingarm, and has done a decent job of replacing the paint missing presumably due to chainsuck (2nd photo looks darker but it's just the camera/lighting).

Re:

Tried out a few different component combinations today, but after trying all the fancy parts I decided to keep the original silver wheels and V-brakes, the only thing I'm going to modernise will be the gearing, changing from 3x8 to 1xsomething.

Replaced the almost rigid Indy XC forks with Marzocchi Bomber Z3 Light, weighty but good, and Bombers & Kona just seem "right" imo. :)

Crankset will be a silver 4-arm from the Hahanna already fitted with a 32T narrow-wide chainring (the original chainset is 5-arm 110BCD and I can only find 38T smallest 1x chainring for that, which I think may be too much).

The cassette in the photo is an 11-42 10-speed just to see how it looks, I have a Sram GX mech/X5 shifter I could use, but am undecided tbh between 1x7/8/9/10 speed... the Hahanna was 1x7 with a normal cassette, which I found fine on flattish local trails but not so sure my mrs would find it as easy! So a wide range cassette is a given whatever.

Original flat bars and long stem will be changed for a retro shorter Kona stem and Riser bar.

Cables arrived, gold  I have a new Gold 8-speed chain somewhere, could be interesting...

Got out for the first ride on the Manonano this morning, and it was indeed "Great!!" 😃.
Only 15 miles or so, but on some challenging trails, and the Kona was surprisingly capable and handled things remarkably well for a 24 years old 28.something pound mtb.
I think I'd like to try a shorter stem at some point, and although the Marzocchi Z3's were plush and tracked well I did bottom them out a few times, some Z1 BAM forks would be a nice upgrade I reckon...

Yeah, those modern wide riser bars don't go well with the old long stems. They force you into an awkward position. Either go for a short stem or a smaller straight handlebar.

Nice bike !
