1997 Kona Kilauea

Dirt Disciple
Hi there!

I've just been pointed in the direction of RB by Pickle having recently discovered a 1997 Kona Kilauea frame in my shed and musing on what to do with it.

I bought it back in '97 for commuting to school (no idea why I bought such an expensive bike for that) and pretty much only ever saw the tarmac and was ridden for about a year until I bought something else. As you can imagine it's in excellent condition (a few minor stone chips here and there as expected) and I think it's a 19" frame although I'd have to measure it to make sure.

I've also got some of the other bits and pieces that it came with (stem, brakes, levers, shifters, rear mech, etc) and was really just wondering if anyone had an idea of the value of the frame itself. I didn't even know I still had it until today so I'm not desperate to sell, but if the price was right I'd happily let her go to a better home.

Any help or advice gratefully received!

Hi :) I've got the same frame, just built mine into a single speed :)

Hard to price but I was hoping to get about £120 ish for my frame+fork when I do sell it ;)

Cheers
Steve

Values realised are really very erratic and often illogical - e.g., recently on the same evening, a Lava Dome frame sold on eBay for more than an Explosif that was one year newer. Having said that, £100 would be doing quite well, so would advise keeping it.

a low point was set when the frame below was sold on this website for £60 posted, which is surely a travesty. As you can see it looks as though it is a 94 Kilauea freshly repainted and restickered, doesn't even look as though it's had a wheel in the dropouts. £60 posted, I ask you!

Post a pic and we'll tell you the size and maybe give a better idea of value.

Jones; that looks like a lovely bike. Reminds me just how long its been since mine was anywhere near rideable!

Anthony; I'll get some detailed pictures shot over the next couple of days then. I appreciate you offering to help though. :)

Sorry it's taken so long, but photos as promised. I'm sure it's a 20" frame.

I've also got the original Scratch and Sniff tyres (hardly used), wheels (Javva front, XT rear on Mavic 221), LX cassette, Kona Race Light seatpost and clamp. Any ideas of value for the frame and other parts?

I still say keep it, but it looks in pretty good condition considering, and there are plenty of size 20 fanciers on here that would surely be in the market for it. Guy! Where are you?

Very rough valuations, if good condition, Kona stem £5, LX V-brakes, 2 pairs £15, Avid levers £10, XT shifters £20, XT rear mech £15, Scratch and Sniff tyres (hardly used) £20, wheels (Javva front, XT rear on Mavic 221) £30 (sound but very heavy I recall), LX cassette £5, Kona Race Light seatpost, maybe £5, if it's still straight it at least has rarity value and the clamp must stay with the frame, separation is against the law.

What's wrong with building it into a bike? It's a classic!

Oh there's nothing wrong with building it into a bike - I'm just having trouble finding P2 forks in the grey/gunmetal colour with a long enough steerer!

If I can find a set of P2s that would fit... I'll probably build her up and use her as a commuter. But if someone really wants the frame and the price is right I'd like to see it go a good home.

Yes, I agree they're rare, but they do exist. You can get new ones of course, but I think they only do them in black.

That's a stunning frame to build up and dont really need a respray job, just touch up only, I would like to have it but it's out of my price range, you should get a good price for it on ebay if you havent sold it to any members on retro bike.

As for the Project 2 forks, I have struggled to get new one from the shops, I have been given suspension correct one from Evans and Rutland cycles even I asked for the standard P2, had to return the forks back to them, I then asked Kona headquarters and was told it will take a couple months before they get any more in stock (I was told this back in January) so my project have gone quiet but been building a Kona for sister at the moment though.

Good luck on the sale.
