1997 kona hot

Re:

Fair enough. I understand some folks can be a bit tetchy, especially if they've been burnt in the past. The fact it's an Altitude Hot is cool; it'd be strange if it was an Enigma one with goat drop-outs. It's another one to add to the Altitude list

So, what do we think about this colour scheme. It's a bit too school colouring book for me.

Re:

re Al's comment...i concur ...the scheme/colourway its looks like its been crayoned on, with extra thick crayons..but after all that its a kona hot..nuff said..i hope it goes to a good home

Wow, that is very interesting. A serial number is needed to confirm if this is Altitude or Enigma built.

I have asked for the serial number, so we may find out who built it and when.

my 1998 kona got has no serial number anywhere. ( unless its under the platic cable router )

I would be surprised if the entire serial number is obscured by the Cable Guide. It may be that the paint is thick enough around the underside of the Bottom Bracket Shell, and the stamping of the serial number has filled in. BTW, a 1998 Hot should have all Top Tube Cable routing, with no Cable Guide under the Bottom Bracket - however, as we know there are many anomalies with the Custom frames.

Pip

well i feel dumb, ive not looked in so long. cable routes are on the top, not going to chissle my paint asawy thou to find one. anyway of telling who made it?

Re:

Enigma Design and Manufacturing took on the contract in early 1997 to build 100 Hot frames and 100 Ku frames.

Enigma Hot frames have a prefix of KH7 & KH8 depending whether they were welded in 1997 or 1998 - the next digit is the month. The 1998 Hot frames will either have a late month in 1997 or 1998.

At some point the Hodaka factory in Taiwan took on the contract to build some of the 1998 Hot frames. We are not sure if this was due to the difficulty that some welders were experiencing with fabricating the frames using all tubes made from Reynolds 853.

Hodaka Hot frames a have prefix of H, and then the year. I only have two of these frames on file - my 1998 Sparkle Red with black & white decals, and Canuck's 1998 Sparkle Green with black & gold decals.

I haven't seen enough examples in detail of Enigma Hots & Hodaka Hots to identify if there is any difference between the two manufactures. I would assume that the stays could differ, although from the few that I have seen, they both use the Dew Drop / New Drop Dropouts that have a "K" stamped in them.

I suggest shining a torch across your bottom bracket shell, and see if you can make anything out.

.... or carry out this horrific crime as seen on a 2001 Fairly Works built Kula:

Edit: I've just noticed your Top Tube Cable Stops, and they differ from mine and Canuck's Hodaka frames. Maybe this is an indication of an Enigma frame. Having said that Ernie's 1998 Starz 'n' Barz Hot is a defo Enigma frame, and those Cable Stops look like mine in the pictures that I have of it..... over to you Ernie ;) .

Thank you for the picture, I've not seen that sticker before on a frame - there's your answer then.

Ernie's is a very early 1998 Enigma Hot, welded in August 1997. Perhaps your different cable stops were something that they used later on in the production run?

I would be interested to know the serial number of yours - any joy with shining a torch across the Bottom Bracket shell? I was joking about using a chisel  .

Re:

Back to the main event then:

I believe that discussing the cost of e-Bay items is frowned upon around these parts, but......

The winner of the bidding on this frame has no buying or selling feedback history. I would say the the winning price is more in line with a Hei Hei or King Kahuna!
