1996 Zaskar LE Build (Finally finished)

Splu

Retro Newbie
Hi all, just completed a Zaskar LE build, which I started over decade ago!! I originally bought the bike cheap, off a mate, which needed saving. But since then various motoring projects have got in the way, leaving the bike forgotten about for many many years. But I finally pulled my finger out, and got it finished :). Happy with the results too.

Re:

Looks awesome. Did it already have a mount for discs on the rear or did you make something. Bet it rides nice with some of the modern parts with the retro frame.

No, originally rim brake only. A US seller on e-Bay sells the calliper mounts for these frames and similar. Just tapped 2 threads into the rear drop out, and job done. The bracket caters for a 160mm rotor, but with the correct adapter, 180mm or 200/203mm rotors can be used. Bike currently has RT76 203mm rotors fitted, but will be dropping the rear to a 180mm soon. Rear end is locking up too easy on slippery surfaces.

As for the ride, yeah it rides nice. Bike weighs a smidge over 8KG.

Re:

8kg? That sounds ridiculously light. Are you sure?

I’ve got a carbon flash team Cannondale Which was the lightest Mtb you could buy off the shelf in 2012 and it’s that weight but has a retail of about £7k.

I’ve got a 96 Zaskar with full XTR and it’s 10kg or more with dependant on which wheels I’ve got fitted.

Re:

The weight cannot be true. Not with Hope brakes and Bomber fork, no way. And Zaskar frame is no feather weight to start with either.

Just weighed it again. Scales are showing just under 8.5kg. Although I'm using an old set of analogue house scales.

Re:

Trust me that’s not a 8.5kg build. More like 11kg....

Buy a digital scale to weigh suitcases for less than a tenner and try that.

Nightmare. That means I'm not as light as I thought I was either !! Lol !!

I'll get it weighed on some digi scales and post up the result.

Re:

Ha it could be a double disaster or even postive .....Weigh yourself on the heavier scales and then the lighter ones and it’s a free weight loss programme.
