1996 Klein Quantum II in Team Storm

Super happy with how my latest project turned out, so thought I'd share the pictures.

Wanted to build a 'restomod' using a Klein Quantum II with modern day Shimano Ultegra group set. Also ended up using a pair restored ZIPP 440s from '95 for some added bling and swapped out the original forks for carbon ones for a slightly more aggressive look.

To compliment the Team Storm paint scheme, all the accessories are painted with Cerakote for that 90s anodised look but with more durability.



Can't wait to do my first cafe ride on it!

I am always blown away by paintwork of this calibre. If you have the time, or inclination to share; could you please post a few pics of the process with some explanation of what is going on?

Unfortunately, I haven't many progress photos... it's something I always intend to do but never actually do. The ones I have are how to do the storm clouds...

1. White base coat
2. Fluro pink randomly sprayed to give a mottled finish
3. Maroon (same colour as the seat tube) applied randomly to give mottled finish
4. Every cloud line is then masked and black shading airbrushed on - these are done one at a time working down from the head tube
5. All the clouds are then masked off and rest of the colours are applied

Next time, I'll definitely take more progress photos!

Thank you for the 101. How do you get a sharp edge to the masking without a ridge of paint left where the mask has been? Can't explain this any better so hope you know what i mean. I think folding the edge back, to soften the edge, is a thing with straight lines but you don't have straight lines.

Only tend to get the ridge of paint if you apply lots of paint and/or use a thicker masking film. You don't need much black to get coverage and this shading is done with an airbrush which produces a really fine spray. You would get a thicker ridge if you were applying white paint over black. For this reason, you always try to apply the lightest colour first before getting progressively darker. But any ridges that are left are buried in several layers of clear coat which can be sanded back and polished so the final finish is completely flat.

Is that Storm paint the hardest to do of the Klein paint jobs?
