1993 Kona Kilauea

Had a spare 5mins today so decided to strip the bike ready for cleaning. Most parts were original and by the looks, and force needed, they had never been removed. It came apart without any issues though, the bb wasnt as bad as i expected and is still very smooth. The headset bearings were dry though but all still intact and not really worn :)

Managed to clean a few parts today before my hands froze :)

Still need to pop the headset cups out and clean them and around the frame. Sprayed some WD into the tubes and wiped and checked the threads, they are all good, not so bothered about the paint chips and scrapes in places as i am just going to build it back up to ride, but i do need something to treat the exposed metal with, normally i just use WD but if anyone has any better solutions that would be great ;)

Very nice, a bike I'd love to own myself. Fantastic condition, can't have seen much use.

No, all the original components were not really worn and apart from dry bearings in the headset everything was still smooth and working fine :) Apart from usual paint loss from the chain and the rear tyre rubbing on inside of frame, and also a water bottle rubbing, the frame and paint are in fairly good condition. It even came with partialy worn original tyres so not much use at all.

Ive seen better but they dont come up very often and i wasnt going to let this one by no matter what condition it was in

A couple more parts cleaned up. Forks and other parts are not in to bad a condition either.

Should have it back together next week  too many things on at the moment, seem to have no time to myself, getting there slowly though :) P1010126 (Medium).JPG P1010123 (Medium).JPG P1010125 (Medium).JPG P1010127 (Medium).JPG P1010124 (Medium).JPG

Still needs grips, saddle, chain and gears setting up.

Re:

I have a soft spot for '93 Kona's as they were stocked in my LBS back in the day when i bought my first Marin. Love the paint scheme. I still have the brochure somewhere.

I know the colors arent as exotic as some of the later Kona's but i really like the two tone paint scheme. Also one of my first quality mountain bikes, and still my favorite model/year. I have never rode a '93 Explosif, but i should imagine it is not as supple as the Kilauea :)
