Terrible detailing... - Agreed - all skirtings/architraves under alteration imminently, so was a temporary chop after removing the old balustrade. Well spotted
Have you put any isolation between the cable and the underside of the saddle nose and stem? - Yes. Where the cables connect with the bike they are within short lengths of plastic tubing
If not you should, as even with the light weight of a Merlin it'll soon leave indents on the saddle, and mark the underside of the stem!
