1992 Gary Fisher Sphinx info request

Cactus459

Dirt Disciple
So I purchased this bike today off Craigslist. Older lady had it for sale with almost no background on the bike. Haven't been able to find much information about it on the internet. Originally thought it was a old MTB but right after I purchased it I realized it has 700c x 40c tires. Got it for a great price for a completely working bike. All original minus the seat. Anyone have any documentation on the bike. Cheers!

Evolution refers to the headset being oversize and on a MTB the forks had a decal like a mountain with the words Evolution underneath. Otherwise looks good if a bit odd as I though hybrids (as they were in the uk) were an excuse for bike dealers to shift 700c frames pretending to be mountain bikes ?
Very original

Hi, i'm sure you found the 1992 catalog already
Gary Fisher Sphinx 1992.jpg

If you need more details or oringinal specs i can send you 1991 catalogs (two versions) with more details than 1992.

Actually, to me the Sphinx (from late 1990 - 1993) is not a Hybrid, but rather together with the Diamond Back Overdrive the first Mountain Bikes with bigger wheel diameter. So if you like the "fist 29er" (although 38c tire or 45 in case of Overdrive are not adding up to 29", but the width of those tires was similar like for 26" MTBs).

That blog here calls the Sphinx a Monster Cross

I personally like those bikes a lot, because they are simply faster than 26, so good bike for making longer trips or if you like a good basis for turning it into a Gravel bike (with Dropbar)

Thanks for the the information! I have so little on this bike, hopefully a little bit more shows up. Most of what I want to know I will find out when I start to refurbish the bike. Things like rear hub spacing 126 or 135, guessing 135. I can easily measure and figure out the answer. Would love to find an original seat, but first I have to know what it was. Again thanks and cheers!
