1991 Shogun Trail breaker 2

I don't need another bike, but that's never stopped me getting another bike any way :facepalm:
This time it's an early 90's Shogun Trailbreaker, complete with 200GS groupset.

Despite having a few (too many :facepalm other bikes, I've deemed them "too nice" to use to ride to the shops/gym and leave them locked up outside :roll: the Shogun however I would not be too upset about if it went missing, and being what it is I imagine bike theives would give it a wide berth

I'll see what the tyres are like, but I'll probably fit some slick town tyres to it, fit the U-lock holder, mudguards, and that's all!

Collected the bike up today and its actually as good as it looked in the photos, the seller had even pumped the tyres up for me

Brakes, gears, everything worked without needing any fettling at all.
The tyres are skinny 26x1.5 and although the sidewalls look a bit dry they're still serviceable.
So all I had to do was fit the mudguards, u-lock, and some lights, and it's good to go as a winter shop/gym/whatever bike.

I did weigh the bike before adding stuff to it, it weighed 31lbs, I didn't think it was possible for a basic rigid mtb to weigh that much, but there you go! I'm actually scared to know the weight with all the added extras :shock:

My first MTB was the Shogun TB3 from about a year before with paint splatter finish and 400lx that went through all sorts of not vert cost effective upgrades over time.

Those decals bring back great memories.

Ace to see this.

My first bike was a TB2 from 1992 in grey with Altus C10 components...

Ended up full XT with a Manitou 1 and decent rims.... they were fantastic frames. - sadly mine was a 21” which was way too big!

I won't be going that route with this one! (Famous last words.... :roll: ).

I did however treat the bike to a small "upgrade" today, a set of badged Reynolds 501 steel bars, to replace the rusty original erm... steel bars.... I can't tell any difference, but the new bars are less rusty, and have a Reynolds sticker on them

Also fitted the eBay Cree LED light that I've had a couple of years now, still going strong. Battery pack strapped under the top tube

Hello. I wonder if you can help me.

I have the same Shogun Trail Breaker, in blue, bought new over 30 years ago and wheeled back out when I got back into cycling (pre pandemic).

I was only going to use it for a year to prove to myself I was serious about cycling again before splashing out on an expensive road bike.

Then the pandemic struck and I haven't been able to get that expensive you road bike, so am still using the Shogun.

I had to replace the chain a couple of months ago, and that highlighted the fact the 12 tooth sprocket had worn out.

I now need to replace the sprockets / cassette / cogs but I'm not sure what will fit out of what is currently available?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The rear hub I believe is an FH-HG50 I believe. The sticker has come off it so hard to tell. The front hub still has it's sticker and is a HB-RM50.

The cassette is 7 speed and I suspect it might be a CS-HG50 but I can't see any markings on it to confirm this. It's 12 to 28T.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Hi, they're Shimano Exage hubs, so any 7-speed Shimano Hyperglide compatible cassette should fit, SRAM make compatible cassettes too, as do others .
I'd stick with the same cassette ratio you have, that way you'll avoid any issues.
