1991 GT Timberline

I saw this '91 (I think) GT Timberline on Ebay mid-week. Before I left work I placed a bid and I arrived home to find I'd won it.

It had been sitting in a garage for years. And it's all original. It needs a new bar and grips, and a new chain, but it cleaned up really nicely after just a quick wash. It should look even better once I clean up the drivetrain and polish the paint.

I realise it's no Zaskar or Xizang, but it's a cute little GT and I'm happy to give it a new lease of life. :D

Re: £10.32 worth of 1991 GT

Great old timberline, I like that green paint and how it works with the skinwall tires. This makes me pretty glad, I wish more people in the old bike community would see the fun in just fixing old bikes even if they aren't a top of the line model, and not spending hundreds to do it. I got a 96 GT Talera for 20 bucks last summer and fixed it with parts from here and it's a blast. Post some more pictures once you get that thing tuned up!

Re: £10.32 worth of 1991 GT

Yep, I'll be sure to keep this thread updated.

I really like this little bike. The paint came up really well with a little Meguiars Ultimate Compound. I've used this to restore the finish on a couple of faded old bikes and it always impresses.

The wheels (Araya rims with Exage LX hubs) came up really nicely. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) those amberwall Cheng Shin tyres disintegrated around the bead when I took them off. It's currently wearing a pair of orange Michelin Wildgrippers, which really suit the green frame.

And I've still to clean up the brakes, the rusty bolts (Dremel time!), and source some pedals - possibly an old pair of silver GT flatties.

A new silver polished GT handlebar is on its way, as is a new VGC Exage 300LX chainset I picked up (the old near-side crank arm had twisted on the bottom bracket axle, resulting in the cranks being out of alignment.

Will post pics when I have them.

Excellent buy, great colour too.
+1 on the fixing up the cheaper bikes, I've had some great fun on my bargain GTs.
£50 is the most I've spent on a used GT (got me a completely original 92 Avalanche) !!

Phwoar, your Timberline is mint. My $30 got me this one.

+1, I have a few other GT's so my humble Timberline has been reborn as an SS.

A fun bike no matter its status in the GT food chain. but damn it can be unforgiving and rigid with a capital 'R' but I just love those retro GT paintjobs.

We can do an inaugural Sydney chapter 91 & 93 Forest Green Timberline ride. As Phil Liggett would say, 'a very select bunch....'....
