1990 Pacific Mountain Expert

Old School Hero
Hi Folks,

This is my latest purchase. It took some digging to find out the lowdown on what it actually was.
It's had a bit of a hard life (the usual wear parts have given up and been replaced by a franken bike shop)
It has a TY33 crank (bleughhh), some dayglo blue pedals, Diacomp ss5 levers and deore thumbies, and black wall tyres.

It's torn down fully now (It's just the bare frame), and we have sourced the correct missing bits. I'll post pics as we build it up again.

:)

Re:

I'm familiar with this brand. I bought a 1990.5 Pacific Super Xt new in 91. I was about 19 and was desperately trying to get as much as possible for my dollar - typical Yorkshire philosophy.

Pacific were the factory that manufactured most, if not all, of the 'made in Taiwan' big brand bikes around that time - Alpinestars being one. At least that was the sales pitch that drew me in. They were imported by Nigel Dean, an ex-racer and bike builder in Hull.

I splurged £599 on:

Tange Prestige frame, full Xt apart from bb and 1 1/4" headset - that forever needed tightening. It was bright pink with white cake icing like the 91 bike, but the non-e-stay frame. I added a pair of Orange Ram-bars and went proper mountain biking. It was brilliant.

I rode it until it got stolen in about 94. I was devastated.

I encountered a lot of snobbery because it was unfashionable. I did care because I was young and hankered after something cooler. I shouldn't have, apart from the headset it was bulletproof. I never had a problem with it, rode several thousand miles on it, and had many great times.

Good luck with your restoration

Re:

So we tore it apart completely. Here are a few from the rebuilding:

The wheels were a mess, so they were stripped. Here is one being laced by my son, after we cleaned everything and the two completed together.
The following pictures show the cleaned and polished frame set rolling (with patina, but clean patina) and freshly painted stem and bar combo reassembled.

The blue is much brighter than the brochure shows (I uploaded the brochures in the brochures area) and the top tube stickers and fork stickers are different than shown. The graphics don't show up too well in the pics, I'll try to snap some in good daylight.

It's nearly complete now we've collected all the correct 1990 spec shifters and crankset, just awaiting reassembly. I like the saddle (despite being battered, its an original pacific logo one).

Re:

It really is starting to look like a bike now.

It's adjusted and ready for a bit of a shakedown. Have to find some grips tomorrow and try it out if the weather is nice.
I hope the decals show a little better in this set of pictures. It certainly looks less tired with all 1990LX and the muck taken off.
The paint in real life is pearlescant, similar to what Yamaha use to paint their sports bikes in, and you see on Toyota/Lexus cars, the colour really sparkles.

I hope you like it.

Its been a while, but with the nice weather today I finally finished up the leftover jobs and wheeled it out in the sun.

I hope you like it!
