1990 Jack Taylor Tourist Tandem #8638 FINISHED pg7

DX it is, I think the black just looks better with the yellow. Also the brakes, front & rear mech are also DX.
This HD-M651 headset is a much shorter stack than the Tange that was on here and as I’ll be using a stem with built in Canti stop/hanger I think I’ll need to trim at least 6mm off the steerer tube.

I know nothing of tandems, but my instinct would be to keep the existing stack-height,, and use some spacer in the headset.

Can we see the chainstay patch?

I’d normally agree, but the thread near the top has had a hard life and the sandblasting hasn’t helped, so right now it feels a little too worn to really tighten up so I was thinking of trimming it down to where there is a little more “meat” as the stem I have for this build is already quite tall!
Little note about the stem, it’s 22.2mm (7/8”) which one would normally use in a 1” headset & the eagle eyed may have spotted this is 1-1/8” well this Taylor tandem steerer is double thick so it’s 7/8” ID 1-1/8” OD.

Fingers crossed there’s enough space for the chain set. It should be unless my measurements were wrong 😬🤞
 
Ah ok... 6mm seems to be a significant fraction of total stack to sacrifice though, especially on a machine presumably expected to support 20+ stone of human. Have you run this strategy past Caygill?
..not that there's anything inherently stronger about a high stack.
Is that the edge of another patch on the top surface of the chainstay?

Have I run it past Caygills? No, and I’m unlikely to. As I’m much happier living with the consequences of my own actions than I am others 😁
The extra lump you see on top is a clear chain stay protector which I didn’t ask for as I plan to put a shark tooth on there

It's interesting how they replaced the damaged tubes of a fillet made frame?

Do they melt the fillet and remove the suspect tube, then mitre a new tube and re-fillet?

Oooof! That looks delicious.
My JT tandem frame is still hanging on the wall. Last winters Grand Master Plan was to build it up with some old Campag Record kit for a couple of friends to do a TT on. Alas, I cannot find a way to reliably run a square taper axle in the rear O/S BB. I have assembled a Frankenbracket that runs smooth by hand but there’s no way it would take a thousand watts of pedal force!
All suggestions accepted.

Not quite.
This one was cut out and prepped by hand then a new 531 DB tube was mitred and filet brazed to reduce the amount of heat that would be used.
 
I thought it might just be worth having a look back at what the Taylor Boys had fitted (I’m assuming the headset was original) and the top locking nut is a huge thing with at least 10mm of thread. It fits absolutely perfectly, so it’s having an Evaporust bath for the night and will receive a quick squirt of acid-etch black tomorrow. 😎
