1990? Al Carter Saratoga II - much lipstick for this pig

Hi folks. I'm usually on the road side of the forum but this daft project has had me lurking over here a whole lot more.

I bought this bike secondhand as a 17 year old in the early 2000s. I believe its from 1990, possibly 1991? The lad who owned it before me had made a few little upgrades to the original spec but hadn't ridden it much. To make up for that I rode it a lot! To school, to and from summer jobs and plenty of messing about in the woods. I took it to university and it was my daily hack for a few years before I'd ridden it into the ground and the world of road bikes started to call to me.

My dad hung it up in his shed, where it remained for the last 16 years. He was having a clear out this summer so I took it back and decided to do a bit of a refurb. Like all the best projects getting it back to decent order will take way more time and money than its worth! 😄 Even though its a pretty low spec machine it has lots of great memories so still fun to give it a new lease of life.

First job was completely stripping it down as almost everything was filthy, worn or broken (or all three). :p
I'd completely worn out the crankset so my dad had put these old road cranks on to ride it to the pub! One of many many items that needed total replacement.

Eventually I got it stripped; the bottom bracket was a struggle but gave up in the end.

The frame is 4130 CroMo, it feels pretty overbuilt and hefty but that might be my lightweight road prejudice showing.

Lots of parts to replace; the wheelset, the crankset, the front derailleur, handlebar, seatpost and the chain, cassette and cables. Some of this I've dug into my stash for, along with some trades here and a few bargains from the local bike coop and a jumble.

More soon.

All the components were a state! The purple bits were all upgrades made by the first owner - I believe these are Tektro cantis as they look identical to these; https://www.velosaloon.com/collecti...nk-tektro-cantilever-brake-set-from-the-1990s

The link cables are the wrong length and sadly even the bolts are flaking and rusted so I'll need to dig out some replacements for both. Pads will be replaced with Koolstop or similar.

The RD is a Deore LX 550 and has cleaned up nicely despite looking like it was bathed in mud and grease. I love having an ultrasonic bath at work for cleaning parts!

The 7speed shifter pods are fully functional but had loads of rust on their clamp bands, so I took these off and soaked them in Evaporust. A little sand, prime and some gloss black and they are now looking a lot more presentable.

I believe these are Tektro brake levers that match the cantis; they just got a clean and a little grease. The body parts show some rub wear but being alu its a nice patina that I didn't want to just paint over.

The frame has had a good clean and rub down with T-cut. I'll treat any little rust spots and maybe touch in some of the worst decal wear, but it will show it's scars off with pride.

Welcome over from the dark side.

Looks like it's going to be a enjoyable build, as well as a sympathetic restoration. I really like elevated chainstay bikes, and straight bladed forks on them always look good.

Now get on with it, soon be Christmas!

Did a trade with @DuoTech for these LX cranks. A year or two later than the rest of the bike, but still in keeping I think. They were a bit grubby and scratched, but cleaned up well with some elbow grease and a bit of black enamel. I bought some Chinese purple ano chainring bolts off eBay to give them a little extra lift too... 😜
