Hello all. It's been a while since I did a bike thread so I'm pleased to show this one. A Jack Daniels influenced ebay bid landed me this 1989 Saracen Trekker to add to the collection so a trip to Sheffield last night finally united us after the snow had foiled various attempts.

I'm very pleased to report it's about as clean a retro bike as you will find. It has obviously had little use with all original parts present including the tidy and usable Panaracers. These pictures are as I collected it with no cleaning or fettling so it should show up even better.

It's an interesting build as the 500LX groupset does not go with the 1989 frame. :? Best guess would be the usual Saracen trick of chucking any old groupset at old stock frames. I seems a shame to remove the original kit but this is calling out for some M730 XT I have spare or full Deore to match the U brake. Typically I sold a full Deore groupset not very long ago thinking I'd never use it. Opinions always welcome. ;)

Re:

It's interesting to me to note that the saddle is exactly the same as the one on my Tufftrax except genuine leather rather than synthetic.

I like all the little difference of the three frames I have. Most manufacturers seemed to follow a certain design theme where as Saracen had a bash at anything. It certainly differentiates the various models so is good enough for me.

Yes nice, good price too. Looks in lovely condition.

And i agree, xt730 would look good, but looking at the condition i would also be inclined to leave it as is.

That’s very nice, I’d be tempted to change the chainset to dx/Xt//Deore and the brakes/stis and leave the 500 mechs, much more unusual than m73x

Lovely

Re:

Ed - that is awesome! Well worth the trip to Sheffield. Love it together with the Tufftrax and Traverse.

Great little collection

Re:

It really is a cracker and tight as a drum. Know what you mean about the original kit but it feels like it needs upgrading and the groupo isn't period correct.

Re:

Just wow!

That looks like it's just left the shop. The three look great together too.

You've got to love Saracen's ethos back then. I get a distinct feeling that the build spec depended more on what was closest to hand than any decreeable plan for consistency. :D

Re:

That's a beaut....My finger was hovering over the bid button but managed resist. Glad it found a good home though

Oooohhh, I like that.

I can understand why you would want to change a few things but also think it would be a shame. My vote is stick!
