1989 Orange Clockwork frame? 🤞

I bought this bare frame about a year and half ago. It was advertised as an 89 Clockwork.
It has many early Clockwork features, and cable routing under the BB.
The rear stays are thicker and more substantial than later 90s
The serial number begins 88]
I just wanted to be sure it is what it’s supposed to be before I commit to a restoration.
Any guidance regarding group sets or thoughts, and colour options for this year would be very much appreciated.

Apologies for the photo dump and ramblings from the outset, another long post, two years ish in the making.

There are more images to add once my Internet providor pulls its pants out of the gutter, my upload speed at the minute is utter garbage!

For the TLDR Brigade –

1989/90 Yellow Fade Orange Clockwork, Restored with period correct bits.

Certainly looks to be an early Clockwork frame.
A lot of similarities to this one!

Thanks Mace4130, that’s positive!

My frame has lots of similarities, the serial number runs parallel to the BB cups on mine and to be honest the welds in places ( bit splattery!) are not as tidy as the ones on your picture.
Without the front mech cable guide on the upper side of BB also.
I’m hoping this is just an early characteristic of these frames?
The number reads 88]826
There’s absolutely no evidence of its former colour, who ever stripped it was very thorough.
Flouro orange /white, black or yellow fade/white seem to be the period colours?

Certainly looks like it to me although the serial number looks odd? If it is an 88 though it could be right and could be rare. What size is the head tube?

The head tube is 100mm, and takes a 1” headset.

I’ve seen the some of the early Clockworks have both front & rear mech cables routed under the BB. This has the rear mech cable routed along the top tube and top of the seat stay. Seem to change a few times over the years above or below the seat stay?

Yeah, I've had 89's with the metal cable guide on the top of the bb shell and also with a plastic guide under the bb.

Hi all. For sale I have this 17" 1989 Orange Clockwork frame and forks in the rare yellow/white colour scheme. Some will probably recognise it as a few members have owned it over the years. To make it even more interesting it is made from Tange MTB tubes rather than the usual Infinity so there are not many like this about!

It has plenty of patina but the decals and paint are still bright and it has no damage. I'm only selling as I've found the same colour frame in my size so don't need two. Headset seems okay as well so should be serviceable.

Looking for £99 for this and happy to post...

Just picked this up and am very happy to report it's ace and almost original, right down to the Mavic Oxygen rims that they seemed to fit to the LX Clockwork's in 89, but not others in the range.

Some of you may remember that I had a 21 inch 89 in the past (still on the site in mint, re-painted condition) and regretted selling it as they rarely come up in my size, especially in yellow/white so when I was offered this by ant55uk earlier this week I couldn't resist, even though I put myself on a retro buying ban!

Good news is that under the grime it's in better shape than my old one and I...

Thanks , this is looking good. The drop outs do look the same as you say and the joints to the tubes.

Just curious about that frame number now.

The forks I have are as yours also.

Am I correct with colours Satin Black, Flouro. Orange/ white, Yellow fade/ white & all Flouro. Orange for this frame?

No worries mate. Yeah, those are the 89 colours although the orange is bright rather than fluro IMO.
