1988 Brodie Romax

It's finished and I love it

I waited a week before shooting the clearcoat after laying down the base coats, a good idea to ensure the base coat was fully cured and it was also nice to have a few days to carefully add small touch ups to the original red paint where there were some paint chips (top, seat & down tubes).

Personally, I find shooting the clear coat very stressful, it’s not hard to make mistakes which could cause thoughts of starting over if your picky. Fortunately, I got through clearing the frame and I’m satisfied with the results, not perfect but acceptable. I found clearing the stem and fork last year so much easier (for obvious reasons), I find frames a lot tougher being an amateur armed with a rattle to get every surface even, etc.

So after a few days of the clear coat curing I tried my hand at cut polishing some areas which received less paint and were lacking that smooth texture the thicker areas had with pretty decent results I think. Overall, I’m very happy with the finished frame paint results.

This 18.5” frame shares the same geometry of the 18” catalogue spec, compared to my previous 19” brodie climbMax it has a shorter top tube and wheelbase, I’m not a very tall dude so the fit is much better. I absolutely love the ride.

The yellow Turbo saddle was a big splurge being an NOS example, I picked it up last year in the fall. Kinda the icing on the cake I think 😊

I’m lucky enough to own some great retro MTB bikes. All the bikes I dreamt about BITD. This romax tops them all though. It really ticks every box and then some 😊

Awesome bike and build! Very nice work!
I agree with you 100% in regards to clear coat. I messed up all my frames at the first try so far.
