1988 Brodie Climbmax

I learned an interesting bit of history on the bike this week. I searched the name from the original bill of sale on FB and reached out to see if he was in fact the original owner. Turns out he was and mentioned he had sold this bike to Paul some years ago but could not recall when.

When buying the bike from Rob a couple weeks ago he mentioned hearing that Paul may have put the current decals on, the decals are not original as there are scratches beneath some parts. So seems possible. I may ask Paul about it if we cross paths at a future swap meet.

Anyway, interesting to know it was back in Paul's possession for a period at some point

Nice work, you can hardly see the touch ups. And glad I could help paint wise, it was the 4th brand of paint I tried, all others were utter rubbish. Fortunate coincidence that it´s so similar to the Klein paint.

Did you try to fade the new paint in or just made a hard tape line on a suitable place?

I mostly just used lot's of towels so that only the outside of the chainstay was exposed

I had to do it twice though, first time I tried to fade mid way back and not the full lenght but the transition was too noticeable

Second time I used masking tape on the dropout scallop edge and the towels were enough to ensure only the chainstay edge needing paint received it 👍

Ok thanks, maybe I´ll have to revisit how much of my frame needs fresh paint. It´s probably less noticeable to do larger parts like a whole chainstay rather than to attempt a spot repair.

I’m 99% done. Final touches are still in the mail: Tange MTB tubing decal, Repro alloy crank dust caps & XT BR-M732 canties.

I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. With the frame being on the heavier side I was less worried about gram counting. I could have easily used a lighter stem, pedals, tires and brake levers but this I think helped the build be where is should be. The shorty XT brake levers weigh a lot but they also feel better than many others, I haven’t rode them since the 80s, they work and feel great.

It’s great to have a Brodie in the collection, it’s easily my favorite in the stable 🥰

Here is the final build spec: (moved to last page of thread)

Awesome!!! 😎

That’s still a very respectable weight (under 25lbs) for a late 80s steel framed MTB! 💪

The problem you have is that your two previous builds were a Klein and a Cannondale (if I’m not mistaken) so any builds after these will feel a little on the heavy side! 😜
