1988 Brodie Climbmax

Well I've sourced most parts and before I tackle the frame paint touch ups I've made another mock-up. The pictured stem is the correct length and angle for what I'm going for but no cable noodle or similar on this one, at least I know what I'm looking for. The reach matches my Klein while being higher off the ground by an inch or two, should fit perfect. The pictured handlebar is not staying.

The wheels borrowed from my Ritchey work good for the mock-up as they share the same tires I'll use.

I'm loving the black rings on the XT cranks which just went through a polish, Interloc seatpost is staying

I ordered the pictured Flite and received it before the weekend, it's a 91' 😁. It had some scuffs which cleaned up nicely. I've started using my black Sharpie paint pen with really good success. I rub on some paint and then rub it in with my hand until it looks right, follow up with a couple coats of Proofide

I've sourced a really good color match of touch up paint so looking forward to sorting the frame out next

Can't wait to ride it!!

I missed this one, great score. Especially nice to get a Rich one

Thanks @raidan73 I've read Paul's book as of a few weeks ago but keep learning more about the history, nice knowing it's original paint by Rich for sure

It must have been loved (or ignored). My Rich painted one is very rough around the edges

Putting out a question here about possible frame tubing. The frame weight is higher than I expected at 5lbs 2oz even for a 19" frame.

Speaking with Roy before weighing it the best guess was Prestige double butted tubing for an early Climbmax but I'd expect a Prestige frame to weigh less.

I also posed the question to Paul who was not 100% certain and agreed Tange MTB was more likely. I want to use a tubing decal and was hoping to use the correct one.

Would a safe bet be Tange MTB double butted? Or did Prestige tube sets from 87'-88' weigh a bit more? I though a Prestige frame would be closer to 4lbs.

If indeed MTB I kinda like this one

I'm pretty sure the Romax was Prestige and the climbMax butted Tange. Not 100% sure on the decal timeline but that one you've pictured would certainly be close

The 1990 catalogue states the climbMax was Tange Prestige double-butted tubing.
Best guess it might be that. If Paul hasn't got it in his notes then we are all guessing.

I just found my earlier brodie catalogue, not sure of the year, talks about the climbMax
being fillet brazed by Paul using Tange 4130 chromoly butted tubing. That is all i got.

Touch up paint is finished and I’m now starting to build it up.

Swapped parts added compared to as purchased: XT Headset (touched up), black alloy handlebar, tires, new cassette and recently painted stem (has internal cable routing)

I sourced some model paint in neon red and with a tiny brush touched up small chips and small scratches after applying some white, it turned out half decent for the most part I think and helps protect the frame of course. The drive side chainstay had a fair bit of missing paint and scratches due to chain suck and small touch ups would not have looked the best. I used the red neon spray can @Dr Dremel recommended after applying white rattle can. I sprayed the full length of it so the ends of the spray pattern would be less noticeable. I think its a really good match.

I should be able to get out for a spin this weekend 😁
