1985 Raleigh Competition

JFEC

Retro Newbie
This is my first complete restoration project, although I've been taking tools to bikes for as long as I could ride one.

The bike was in a bit of state when I bought it, so it's had a strip and colour matched respray, replacement headset, BB, chainrings, freewheel, cables, pads, saddle, tyres, head badge and lever hoods as well as a full set of Raleigh and Reynolds decals. The pedals are late 80s Shimano toe clips that I've had from new. I've learnt a lot about obscure components and assembled a pretty good set of tools, some like the headset press are home made. I'm not 100% happy with the bar tape, it looks a little modern, but it will be comfortable and I didn't set out to build a concours example.

How I bought it (with my Mavic tubs on as the original wheel bearings were badly adjusted and very dirty)

I found MrW's thread really helpful for reference, thank you!

If anyone is restoring one of these or very similar, I'll gladly share my parts list and specs

Fastback, all chrome sloping crown forks, non aero brake levers, drilled chainring and white bar tape..............what else is there for a bike to have :D

Thanks for the replies and kind words everyone!

The respray was done by an Isle of Wight blaster and painter who is used to working with rarer steel bike frames who came recommended by several people

Here's a photo of the stays before the work started.

Wow, love it!

and thank you :D

The original bar tape (as per mine) is Ambrosio, and it can be bought here: http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-t ... mbrhbtp200

Seeing this means that mines going to have to be dug out and cleaned up as it hasn't seen the road in nearly a year and is fairly grimy!

Edit: I'm looking to replace the chain stay 'chrome' decal as mine is knackered, where did you source yours?
