There should be a nice ratchet sound as you go from the smallest cog to the largest, then smooth back down - but it has been ten years since I last used a set

These have a nice ratchet sound in both directions. I thought they’d be like the early 90’s left/front mech friction shifter, but they’re not. They have two cable ways out (with a tiny black plastic blank that can swap between the two, an the catch for the cable end works both ways. This looks like it’s set up this way so they only had to make one mechanism that could be used for either left or right. I’ll take some photos later.
I’m pretty sure it’s a lack of friction that’s stopping them operating correctly which may well be my fault as the units have to be taken apart to instal the cable...
School boy error on my part, I assumed the previous owner had them set up correctly, as although the castings can be used either way, the ratchet system inside obviously can’t.
So now with the cables the other way around they of course work perfectly
Well… yes, it had been in some Eastwood rust dissolver the night before, but as this is a remover rather than converter, if you forget (as I obviously did) to treat/protect the raw metal surface, it gets a new layer overnight!
If I hadn’t have run out, it would have, and as Evaporust converts the rust I wouldn’t have had this problem… anyway, all sorted now..
So, the thumb levers are sorted, and all cabling is complete, nothing left to do but put a chain on….
Which was going to be a NOS boxed and still sealed in its bag Uniglide CN-UG30.. but an eBay search alert advised me of a lightly used Shimano 600 EX Uniglide chain for £15, the only other one I have seen is a New in Box in California for over £70 + shipping + customs charges etc etc…
So, yes, I clicked and now will wait another week before the upgraded Canyon gets its test ride and photo shoot….
