Fitting the older wider chains worked but it was still 'clank clank clank clank clunk'

It's not as bad as that by a long stretch. Actually way quieter than an indexed setup.

Anyone got a longer 26.4 seatpost?

What length do you want?

Doesn't need to be much longer than the existing one but an extra inch or so wouldn't hurt. Er...

I'd be inclined to stick a more modern / micro-adjust post in it as those old-style clamps are a bit crap IMO.

Re:

According to the first in first out rule I should be leaving this alone but I can't resist which is hopefully a good sign that I'll actually ride it.

Started taking it apart and cleaning up. Cosmetic damage to the frame aside, it's actually all in OK condition and cleaning up nicely. Headset was notchy and stiff but very tight so hopefully will be smooth enough with new grease and bearings. Compared to a budget Tange it's pretty poor quality really but I'm resisting the urge to spend out on upgrades. Still, shows how far some things have come - far eastern manufacture of "budget" components was a game changer for the bike industry.

The frame however, is lovely. Really neat up close, nice forged Suntour drop-outs and fork ends. The GB bars and stem are also really nicely made. And I have a soft spot for Weinmann centre pulls - lovely.

The rack is surprisingly heavy (as well as flexy) so I'm going to put an alloy Blackburn one on. Sorry Peachy.

Can't decide re the gears. The 6 speed 105 shifters below keep winking at me. And the cage on the fitted Suntour appears wonky - might be the hanger though so I'll check alignment before condemning it...

Flat bar gravel grinder?

Haha. Yeah. 27" wheels are gonna be the next big thing for the bike industry - the bigger the better, right?

Would just need to find spme Kenda K161s...

Is actually tempting. ;)

Re: 1983 Claud Butler Majestic

I could do with those shifters

But I also have the matching front and rear mech which would look nice on that as they're the black and silver version

Hands off! ;)

They seem surprisingly plentiful on the bay of e. Also I thought 6 speeds were too few for you? Sunrace do some OK looking 8/9 speed band-on ones.

I've got an incomplete, scruffy correct era rear black/silver 105 mech here. Could probably cannibalise something to make it practical again. But was thinking might be better off with a long cage mech. I'm sure I could make a short cage mech work OK, but MT60 would be perfect I think. Or maybe I could put a longer cage on the 105 while I'm at it... ooh that would be fancy.

Any issues with road front mech and triple? No real reason to ditch the Mountech, except just because.

I can make a long cage 105 for you, I have a spare DX long cage

It would look quite funksty
